Lets see here. I use my SB-600 on camera set to manual. I set it to 1/64th power as I use it just to trigger the strobes. I can not use it off camera in commander mode or with TTL as the SB-600 and TTL take over the exposure and the strobes wont fire. I use the shutter speed of 1/180 or 1/200 nothing slower or it wont sync. You can use a hot shoe adapter to plug in the cord for triggering the strobes but you still can't use the SB-600 off camera when using a sync cord.
I hope this is the info you are after.

DAMN!!!! So I don't have much use for one strobe then.... I wanted to use my strobe with my SB 600s but that clearly isn't possible! Crap. I guess I have to get another strobe....Photography....what an expensive hobby.

Or you can get a optical hot shoe slave and fire your stobe via sync cable or remote which will trigger your SB. This will allow you to use your SB off camera and give you a few more options for lighting, but you will not be able to use any TTL functions. Or you can fire the SB via remote and use it to fire the strobes optial slave. Or you can use your SB on camera and use a special optial slave with a sync port to fire your strobe and still retain TTL function. There are a few programmable digital slaves that will ignore the SB's TTL pre flash and allow the strobe to sync. You can take a look at wein products www.weinproducts.com/safesyncs.htm
I have not used any of them so I can not tell you how well they work.
Hope this helps you out.... |

I use a hotshoe adapter on my SB-600's with Pocket Wizards to sync with my strobes. It works fine, though obviously I don't have TTL metering (then again when I'm using strobes, I don't care).
Porty from the front, Litepac on the sides, and SB-600 from the back (you can see it).

I second the use of the optical slave like the Wein HS Hot Shoe Slave. Also don't count out some older flash units, like the Vivitar 283/285. They can be found for less than $20 on ebay but are dependable, powerful and with the addition of a cheap peanut slaves can sync wirelessly. A great feature of the D70/s is that if you use a non TTL flash to fire the others it will sync all the way up to the top speed of 1/8000. |
