Okay, I know I am going to regret the answers before asking the question...BUT:
What is the best Canon camera out there for the price?
I'm not looking to buy one right this instant, but probably within the next couple of months. The initial cost is obviously important (under $900), but I'm also wondering about quality, durability, lens compatability, special features, etc.
If anyone could give me their input I would really appreciate it.

| if money is not a barrier, then the easiest is to get the most expensive one in the range you're interested in. |

btw, I'd be willing to get a slightly older model if it meant that it dropped the price. Realistically my range is under $900.

i've heard lots of good stories about the 5D
skip the 30D since most owners usually itch to upgrade to the 5D afterwards... |

Becuase everyone gets so ITCHY, as the previous post describes and CANON introduced upgrades relatively often but a SECONDHAND camera!
Sometimes they've hardly been used.
Good luck! |

| I believe it is highly irregular to use the words "best" and "Canon" in the same sentence ... |

The best camera is the one you enjoy using the most.
Get out there, hold some cameras, get a feel for them, shoot a few frames with them if you can, and rely on your own idea for what feels right to you.
This answer is almost becoming cliche... but it is the simple truth.

Well if your budget is $900 and you want an SLR then you are looking at the Canon Rebel XTi.

| Bodys come and go, but quality lenses will last you a LONG time! When I started the SLR route, I got the RebelXT (350D) and concentrated on getting some nice glass. Now two years later I am ready to change bodies and have some lenses I am really happy with. Just need canon to release the 40D! |

I̢۪ve heard and seen a lot of really nice pictures with a Nikon D50. And now days you can get one for about $600, give or take $100. Also the lenses are interchangeable so if you go to another Nikon you could bring your "glass". haha.

If you buy a Canon SLR (30D, 350D, 400D), buy the body only with a separate good lens. The lens may cost as much, if not more, than the camera body. Skip the kit lens.
B & H prices for bodies:
Canon 30D 1,120.95
Canon 350D 509.95
Canon 400D 684.95 |

You might want to mention what you want to do with your camera that you cannot do now.
Do you need a SLR and the expense that goes with it or would you be happy with an higher end point-and-shoot? |

I like my point and shoot just fine, but I'm going to take photo classes in the fall and therefore want to move up to an SLR so I can get comfortable with it before classes start. |

I know I will probably get stoned for this, but...I love my pentax k100d. I have arthritis in my hands so I went to a camera shop and held every single camera there with various lenses and even though Pentax was heavier, the grip was so much easier for me to hold.
As another bonus, you can use regular batteries or rechargeable ones instead of having to buy expensive special batteries. Plus, I already had multiple SD cards so I didn't have to buy any more to start (however, I just bought a 4g card so I don't have to change so often :-)
In addition, you can use pentax lenses from 35 mm cameras. It won't do all the auto stuff, but if you can get good glass for cheaper that really helps the budget.
Lastly, the shake resistance is in the camera body instead of the lenses. apparently that makes the glass cheaper than other makes.
I know a lot of my pictures aren't that great, but, I will admit that it is the newbie operator and not the camera.
Our camera store here had a great expo day where each camera sent their people to showcase what they had. It was a great experience and I learned so much.

These are digital classes? If this camera is for taking digital classes and you want to save money, the Canon 350D would be sufficient. Use the extra cash for a better lens.

I believe they are changing their return policy on electronics...they lost tons of $$$ because of the generous policy and are now tightening up. |

I knew that I would eventually want to upgrade to FF, so I purchased a used 10d. Love it and it is more than enough camera for what I do at the moment. The money I saved on the camera, went to lenses. You seriously should check out the used market, as there is a lot of good equipment out there that is a generation or two back and hardly used. Like someone above said, some people have to have the latest bling. Cool for them, even better for us bottom feaders.
