whats with the little greyscale bar underneath the comments box when voting? is it just so you can use it as a reference as to the values in the picture itself... or something else?

It's to make sure your PC monitor is properly calibrated. If you don't see each square seperatly means the contrast/brightness settings aren't optimal.

Right, with one exception: on a properly calibrated CRT monitor, you might not see the last two black bars as separate.

Two possiblities I can think of are that whether you can see those two blocks may depend on the number of colors the monitor can support, and the bar may work on LCD screens. |

Excellent question. I've been wondering why DPC doesn't replace it with something else.
I believe Kirbic is the one who confirmed my point about the last two bars, but it was definitely someone on SC.
Now, on the image at the top of this page, I can see all of the distinct bars:

Paul, is "number of monitor colors" even relevant anymore? For what it's worth, mine is 32 bit.
