Nikons have a lot of noise with longer durations (heat bleeding onto the sensor I believe). If you plan on using shutter speeds of longer durations, turn on the in-camera noise reduction. You will take fewer pictures, but they will be better quality.

You should look into get a 50mm f1.8, the 18-135 you have is too slow for low light stuff.

If it shots of people, the long-exposure problems aren't a big deal. Nikons are good with flash, pick up an SB600 or 800 and a diffuser and you should be set.

Fast lenses are good, but it's very hard to focus in the dark so you'll probably be stopping down and turning up the flash. Wider lenses give you more DOF so that helps.

Another option would be getting a handlemount flash like a Sunpak 555, and a cable so you can hold it off to the side for light that isn't as flat, but they're big and heavy, and you need to use your third hand (?) to focus or zoom.
