âGod is a verb.â âR. Buckminster Fuller

Iâve been hearing certain questions lately, questions that have been frustrating people and even starting arguments.

What is art? Is this art? Is that art? What is not art? Why isnât this art? Is art universal? Is this universal?

Yes, art is universal, but only art the verb. Art the noun is subject to change, to forgetting, to miscommunication and misunderstanding.

Art the verb is what happens when the audience comes in contact with the work. Art is a revelation that sparks within the audience; art encompasses the entire bloom of that revelation, however slow or fast it might be. And within that blooming process hides the process of the artistâs creation. The two processes resonate with each other, spark against each other.

If you see something you donât understand and think, âoh, this must be art,â then you are mistaken. If you see something you donât understand and think, âoh,â then there might be some art going on.

If you see something you understand and think, âoh, this is art because it has the following rules of composition and technique,â then you are mistaken. If you see something you understand and think, âoh, Iâve never understood this before,â then most probably, thou art.

Thou hast taken my name in vain. Art is a rampaging, village-burning, tormented soul.

Methinks thou art mistaken...

Once, I had a prof tell me that because the earth is both a noun and a verb, the earth is a "nerby system"

I dropped the class the next day.

Art is what you make of it. Whether it be creating something yourself, or taking something out of something someone else created.
