Is there a way to edit a photo partially, close the file, and later open the file to continue editing it, retaining the ability to change the prior PP steps? Is this an option in Photoshop? Is it dependent on saving the photo as a certain file type?
The reason I ask is that every once in a while my computer will need to be restarted to clear the memory or resolve a current computer error and I'm losing my editing on the images I'm currently working on. It's rather annoying and I'd like to avoid it if possible.
TIA
BTW: I'm using PS6 |

Best way to retain much of what is done is to use layers. Other than that the history is not saved.

The closest you can come to doing that is using Adjustment Layers. That won't catch all your editing, but it does allow you to go back and tweak some things. Sizing, filters applied, cropping can not be undone once the file is closed.
The actual history of the editing is only saved while the file is open. Even then it only goes back a limited number of edits.
