It was my understanding that Mr. Bush never completed his National Guard obligation, technically making him AWOL. As Commander in Chief, I believe he should be subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice -- since he's so fond of suspending Constitutional rights may he should try out the new system for the rest of us.
Propaganda so blatant and callous at taxpayer expense (or perhaps, especially if not) may have a backlash effect ... it's a tricky topic to get right, and intellectual superiority appears not to be the forte of the current administration. |

His last grand photo op, landing on the deck of a carrier, has lost it's luster because of ongoing hostilities in Iraq. This one was certainly a major morale boost for troops in a combat zone, and for that he deserves much credit. The scary part was that he spoke about the US troops staying in Iraq and not about an equitable conclusion to their deployment there. For those of us old enough to remember the Vietnam War the chorus of history repeating itself rings louder in the wings almost daily.

As someone who spends a part of nearly every day on a military base working with soldiers, I can tell you that regardless of any nefarious ulterior motives (if there were any), the actions of the President were appreciated and important to the soldiers in Iraq.
He put himself in danger to make a connection with those men and women in Bagdad and I think it was an important trip to make.
Shari (Who had email this week from two students who have been in Bagdad since August and couldn't be happier :-D )
