How about having a real no-edit challenge? Enter a shot as it comes out of your camera. The only change allowed is to resize down to 640.

This has been done once before. The Past I believe. I'm very much in favour of having more! |

The Past
Challenge Details
Challenge: The Past
Details: Photograph things that give a sense of times gone by.
Submissions: 115
Rules: To attempt to recover from last week's mistake (the Future Challenge), this week we are doing the Past. The catch is that you are not allowe to do any post processing what-so-ever. You are allowed to resize -- and that's final. |

MadMordegon, if you think you "dont stand a chance in the normal challenges", you have missed the point of the rules here at DPC. You have the same chance as the rest of us, in digital photography that is, not in use of photo-editing software. That's what this site is about, learning to use your digital camera. Considering the camera you have, I'd say that you have an advantage over many who participate in the challenges, me among them, but I'm not complaining. I know my photos could be improved in software but I haven't maxxed out on learning to use the digital camera to it's best advantage yet, so I feel that I have much to gain from DPC. Until you accumulate a few ribbons you might do well to try to learn as much as you can here, and stop whining about not having a chance because you can't enter your digital creations. |

achiral, it is a real photo, then modified. cykhansen liked it (thanks cykhansen :)
coolhar, sorry if it sounded like whining. i meant for it to be more like a joke and/or suggestion..
ive never owned a camera before, much less a sweet digital. i just got that 717 camera about 2 months ago (allready got allmost 3000 pics taken :) so im new to photography but ive been doing graphic (photoshop) design for some time, hence my slight advantage in that dept. ;)
and i have learned alot here, dpchallenge is awesome. <3
this is for DPC and coolhar (this is a photo, no modifications exept making it 640/480)

i think the issue is that this is primarily a photography challenge site. they do open it up every once in awhile to digital editing. but if your true passion is photoshop (or whatever you might use), there are many other sites that cater to those interests as well. gl to ya. |

What exactly is it a photo of? A computer screen? If so, that is not DPC-legal.
In terms of challenge entries, this site is about photography, and not about "digital art" (even though that art may have elements that are photographic). That distinction is very key, and will become even more so. There are powerful tools out there that can be used to make a photo "the best it can be". Those same tools can also be used to turn a photograph into something that could only be generated in the digital realm. This site deals with the former; there are lots of other sites where the latter is also welcomed.

I am new to this group, but I thought all of our submitted photos for contests have to be just as they come out of the camera....only resizing the photos are allowed. Am I wrong? I hope this isn't a silly question, and I've missed something here....won't be the first time or the last! |

You are allowed to make some basic edits, like sharpen, rotate, crop, brightness/contrast...
Read the full rules here:

While I think that MadMordegon's picture purple_eyes2.jpg
is very clever, it is not what I expect at DPC. I'm here to learn more about photography and to practice what I learn.
At the same time, I sure wish I had the artistic flair and PhotoShop knowledge to create a picture like purple_eyes2.jpg

that picture is a reflection of text on my monitor from the bottom of a CD.(the only thing on the screen, also the white text provides the only light in the room).
here is one focusing on the opposite:
