Okay, I've never left this kind of message before because I already have my wedding business set up and running the way I like it, but...

I was asked by some guys who are throwing kind of a "young adult prom" and they want a photographer there to shoot couples and groups. They indicated that the guy they had previously arranged to do this had to back out. So I'm not sure if that's an indication that the other photographer decided it wasn't worth it, or if he had other engagements.

Anyway, I was wondering several things here:

1) What kind of packages would you expect to offer for a prom setting?
2) How would you price those packages?
3) How would you fulfill those packages?

#3 has me the most puzzled because I'm generally working with people who will see their proofs before they order. But in this case, I'm guessing that people will be plunking down their change sight unseen. So do I just shoot for a specific package and choose the picture I like the most and print it? Do I try to offer them any means of seeing the pictures ahead of time? Any ideas?

Thanks!

At my ninth grade banquet, we had a photographer shoot pictures of us at the door, but you had to be willing to pay, not just waste his time.

Anyway, he took about 10 frames, changed the poses a bit, and managed to get everyone smiling and looking the same way. Then he had whoever was paying look through the images on his camera and decide which one we wanted.

I thought it was a very good way of doing things, you'd just have to guard your camera, and make sure you're the one holding it, etc.

as for prices, I'm not the person to ask.

Hope it goes well for you!

When I was in high school the guys taking pictures at the dances would set up giant posters with "proofs" on them the next week at school. You would run your finger down the line of proofs (not much wider than a strip of negatives), find the pictures you wanted, and filled out order forms.

But for prom, we pre-filled order forms with the packages we wanted. Brought the order form and money with us. Handed them over. They shot a few shots, then sent us the appearant "best of the group" in sizes we picked out on the order form. All of these shots were of couples. At the dance there were other photographers for bigger groups and they offered up images like the above scenario.

Hope this helps.

I talked with my daughter this morning (senior in hs) and she basically said the same thing. So I guess I won't worry about proofing, I'll just get a couple of shots (in case someone blinks) and pick the best for them that fills their package. Sounds a bit "cookie-cutter-ish", but for the number of kids I may be photographing, that's probably the best that can be done anyway.

Thanks for your input.
