Not talk to anyone
not look at anyone
take pictures only of inanimate objects (and even then be careful)
dont move too fast, but dont move too slow either?
and dont call buildings what they clearly are? and i should be fine?

That probably covers it. To quote a once-popular bumper sticker, "Welcome to California -- Now Go Home"

Probably the biggest factor in avoiding unpleasant situations (pretty much anywhere in the world) is to go about as if you belong there and know what you're doing, even if you don't. It is those who appear lost and confused (and who often are) who are the most common and vulnerable targets of muggings and stuff.

Whenever I feel afraid
I hold my head erect
And whistle a happy tune
So no one will suspect I'm afraid

Yeah, and DON'T rent a station wagon, you won't be shot, but you will be humiliated.

This is California, this is America...some of you guys made it sound like some third world country. Bad people are everywhere, no matter where you are, just becareful where you go, do some research and plan ahead. Don't worry!! the recommended places in this forum are flooded with thousand of tourists everyday, they are very popular. Hehehe and don't mind other DPCers trying to freak you out, they just want to have a little fun, nothing to worry :)

By the way never travel by yourself in unfamiliar places.

I think most of these have already been covered, but as a San Diegan (who is now going to school in LA) I'll add some stuff.

SD:
1.) The zoo has cool stuff, but the Wild Animal Park (30-45 minutes north of downtown SD) has animals in a more wide-open natural habitat.
2.) Sea World could also be a good choice. [however, all three of these will cost you some $$ to get in($20?)
3.) Go on a Harbor Tour. $20 will get you a two hour tour of the SD harbor. Great skyline shots, as well as going past a HUGE naval base (where you might just catch NAVY SEALs training).
4.) Coronado Island - right next to downtown. Very cool stuff, good skyline shots here too (also some cool restaurants).
5.) La Jolla A well-off beach town with a relaxed attitude. Nice boardwalk shots, very sweet cliffs/coves.

LA:
1.) Beaches. they're plenty of them to hit up. Newport and Hunnington are two I'd recommend.
2.)San Clemente - Very quaint little town, just in between LA and SD.
3.) The Getty Museum - northern LA. AMAZING architecture and landscaping, as well of a view of LA

If in doubt in either place, just cruise around downtown and you'll be sure to find cool stuff.

Hope that helps.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Snip...

Like the General said, the SD Zoo is the zoo to see, probably an hour and a half drive though. If you're going that far, something to check out is the Wild Animal Park. A different experience altogether in a more natural environment.

Snip...

I second the Wild Animal Park (and would take it over the S.D. Zoo) The Zoo (don't take this the wrong way) is way too touristy...just way too many of them all trying to take it in, in one day (never gonna happen)... Everyone is in a hurry and will run you over if you get in their way. Zoo is downtown next to Balboa park so most tourists don't make it out of the area. The WAP is about 40 minutes north of downtown many just don't make it up there.

Zoo has Pandas and Polar bears. Zoo is all crammed into a small area, WAP has a lot of wide open spaces. WAP has Lion Camp. (for those that know WAP the Wagasa Tram took its last trip around the park a couple weeks ago...to be replaced with gas engine truck train thingys)

There is some pretty cool stuff down here in San Dag.

If you plan on getting down this way PM me... I haven't been to the WAP in at least a month.
