Oh yeah, I forgot...

It's ok to shoot celebrities with your long lens, hidden inside a shrub, but don't let their bodyguards catch you...

...you'll be shot.

Have a nice day.

I was prepared with a very long list that includes some politicians and supreme court justices, but then I realized you meant with your camera. Maybe I'll send you the list anyway as I am certain you would come back with some interesting shots.

Seriously, have fun - it's a big state and there's no shortage of sights. I didn't read all the posts, so excuse me if this is redundant, but the drive up (or down) the coast is awesome! San Simeon has the Hearst Castle - an incredible, if not overdone, photo opp.

Enjoy!

Santa Monica Pier is a great idea -- human-scaled amusement park, huge beaches on either side, close to LA Airport (good shots of jets taking off from the side), and lots of shopping and food within a couple of blocks. State Highway 1 runs North from there, and I recently learned it's the terminus of the fabled Route 66 from Chicago (now the end of I-10 from Florida) ...

If you head down to San Diego, there are several ferry rides you can take, too, that I've heard are beautiful. Other than that, the amusement parks are always amusing... I believe the Medieval Times is down the street from Disneyland, too, though I forgot where (I didn't drive).

Edited to add: Oooh! Ooh! If you get the time, take a drive down the PCH (I think it's highway 1) - just beautiful!

Yes, that's Highway 1, but the really outstanding part is quite a way up the road towards Big Sur. I took this in 2002 with my Olympus.

At Long Beach (near Anaheim) is the "Spruce Goose", the gigantic wooden aircraft built by Howard Hughes. Also at that location is the Queen Elizabeth passenger liner. Disneyland is also nearby. Down the coast a short distance is La Jolla where Scripps Institute has a field laboratory with a delightful tour of sealife in it's natural habitat. San Diego harbor is the home of much of the US Navy's Pacific fleet. On Coronado Island (in San Diego Harbor) is a spectacular hotel as well many Naval facilities. A short boat ride out to sea is Santa Catalina Island, a resort where many movies have been shot. Universal Studios, Knotts Berry Farm, P.O.P, and many other diversions abound in the LA area. If all else fails, there are plenty of illegal aliens and liberals to shoot!

Not for awhile. The Spruce Goose is in McMinnville, Oregon.

Yes, but, the huge round building is still there if you wish to see a huge round building.

But, warning, don't call it a huge round building, call it a circular indoor storage facility. If you don't take heed on this advice, you will get shot.

What to shoot in California?

No body has mentioned Yosemite, the park is about 330 miles from Anaheim, I live in Anaheim just spent my spring break in Yosemite. When you're in Anaheim don't forget to stop by Disneyland, California Adventure Park and Downtown Disney. Other places where you can find great photo opportunities in Orange County are Huntington Beach, Newport Beach Bolsa Chica Wetland (bird photography), Laguna Beach, Balboa Beach and of course Little Saigon in Westminster (the largest Vietnamese community outside of Vietnam)

Traveling south about 2 to 3 hours, you'll come to La Jolla, Seaworld, San Diego Zoo/Wild Animal Park, Cabrillo National Monument (where you can get a panoromic shot of Downtown San Diego) and the Black (nude) Beach. Downtown San Diego is nice too.

The Queen Mary is located in Long Beach (a city part of LA county about 20 miles from Anaheim) Harbor right next to the Aquarium of the Pacific. Venice Beach is a great place to do street photography so are Santa Monica Pier and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Of course Universal Studio and the Hollywood Sign are great places. The coastal city of Santa Barbara is really nice too, you might want to check it out.

Beside Yosemite National Park, there's the San Fransico Bay Area where you can visit Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island.

Other nice places in CA are Channel Island NP, Sequoia NP, Death Valley NP, Lake Tahoe, Redwood NP, Joshua Tree NP the Hearst Castle and Catalina Island.

Those are the places, look them up online before you come to CA, have a great trip, enjoy the Golden State :)

Drive about 20 minutes south to Huntington Beach (my backyard) and hang out around Main Street and the pier area. There are many interesting nature and "people" shooting opportunities.

Also, anywhere along the beach 5 miles to the north or 2 or 3 miles to the south. Did I mention sunsets over the ocean? :-)

More Huntington Pier

Queen Mary in Long Beach

Sunset Beach (just north of Huntington)

There have been lots of great suggestions. I don't think you'll find any beaches in Anaheim as someone suggested and Lego Land is down toward San Diego not in Orange County. I think in Carlsbad.

Soo to avoid getting shot i should:

Not talk to anyone
not look at anyone
take pictures only of inanimate objects (and even then be careful)
dont move too fast, but dont move too slow either?
and dont call buildings what they clearly are? and i should be fine?

That probably covers it. To quote a once-popular bumper sticker, "Welcome to California -- Now Go Home"

Probably the biggest factor in avoiding unpleasant situations (pretty much anywhere in the world) is to go about as if you belong there and know what you're doing, even if you don't. It is those who appear lost and confused (and who often are) who are the most common and vulnerable targets of muggings and stuff.

Whenever I feel afraid
I hold my head erect
And whistle a happy tune
So no one will suspect I'm afraid

Sorry -- I was (mostly) kidding. The whole point of that second part and the quote is that it's not really much different from traveling anywhere else -- yes, take the same sensible precautions, but don't obsess over it.
