I had assumed it was because I thought ofg it as rotating which is legal, but now I think it may be moving which isn't.

Flipping is just rotating and rotating is specifically allowed.

i hope you're right - i had thought that but then i thought it isn't just rotation - it is moving the images on the left of the frame to the right of the frame and vice vers - i couldn't see it in the forums or the rukles

Yes, as long as your flipping the entire image (or the entire crop used) it is legal. As said, it is just a rotation into a third dimension.

Yes, it is, do not worry. Flipping (vertical and horizontal) the entire image (or crop used) is legal in both basic and advanced. It doesn't move pixels around relative to each other (as it would in cloning).

BTW, you can't ask for a self DQ in cases where a rule has been broken. In other words, if it were against the rules to flip an image, then your image would need to go through the regular DQ, not the self-DQ.
