Too many, why do you think postage rates keep increasing? They have to perpetuate the bureaucracy somehow.

Here in Philadelphia the pizza shops put menus in you door, or in the fence. Also at shopping center parking lots you will find flyers on your car windshield.

about once a week I get a little plastic baggie hung on my door knob with adverts and coupons from various local businesses. They put a little pebble it in to keep it from blowing away. If they put a nickle in it, I would look at it! LOL

In exchange for a monopoly on first-class mail, the Postal Service agrees to deliver that letter anywhere in the US for the same price. To send a letter/card/photo from Miami to Fairbanks for $0.40 is a pretty good bargain. I'm guessing that courier services are going to charge closer to $4.00 to deliver the same thing across town ...

True, but why should I have to pay that same $0.40 to send a note across the street?

Because that's how "flat rate" pricing works. Some people pay a little more than "cost-plus" and some a little less and on the average it all evens out. Kind of like how you pay the same tax rate for fire protection and sewer service, regardless of how often your use them.

Isn't the whole point of "civilization" to pool the community's resources to pay for things which benefit all, and no individual could create?

i was also jesting at how much money was potentially spent on drafting a law telling me i am not allowed to drop a note in my neighbors mail box. i can understand flat rate postage, and the need for postal rate increases, but how many thousands of dollars went into drafting some of these silly laws. people get paid big bucks to do that legal leg work, and we are paying their salaries....

for instance our legistlature is working on bill that would make drinking coffee while driving illegal, as well as smoking, eating... etc. if a cop thinks he's going to issue a ticket to me for drinking coffeE - he's got another think coming or least he's going to get an earful !

I understand that. My point is, why should it be illegal for me to do it myself? If my car needs a simple repair, I don't have to pay someone to service it, I can buy the parts and do it myself.
