Hey guys,

My brother is a weather nut...the more sever the better in his eyes. He likes to go out storm chasing to capture lighting and storm cloud images. He got a Nikon D50 last year. I wanted to offer up some additional lens suggestions to him...right now he just has the D50 kit lens. What other equipment/lens do you storm photographers find essential (especially you guys/gals using Nikon).

Thanks,
Dave

I'm not sure that this is a kind of photography that lends itself to a particular kind of equipment, really. Seems like you'd want a moderately wide-angle lens for capturing lightning (since you can't really predict exactly where it's going to be in a frame), along with a camera that can do long exposures... and maybe a really wide angle lens for dramatic skies and so forth. And maybe a good zoom if you're trying to get something like a tornado since you really don't want to be all that close to it :)

I dunno... toss in a polarizing filter and an ND filter, and that's that, I guess. It just seems to me that you'd need the same kind of stuff as you'd normally want to have in your bag for a vacation.

I'm sure someone will tell me I'm an idiot here (I'm obviously not a weather chasing kind of person myself), but it just doesn't seem to me that there's a lot of specialized equipment involved here.

well, he might wanna take a serious look at weather sealed camera bodies and lenses.

Thanks for the thoughts guys, especially the filter idea. I keep telling him he needs to look into the weather casings. I've been out with him a few times...its quite a rush :).
