I got this via email with some photos attached from my dad, a retired university professor of geology. He wanted my opinion on whether or not the photos were fake. I searched and found some similar photos here on the web:

//www.canyonsworldwide.org/crystals/index.html
//giantcrystals.strahlen.org/america/naica.htm
//www.crystalinks.com/mexicocrystals.html

Smithsonian Mag... credible??? No photos with the article, though
Youtoob hosted video, a little hokey.

It's entirely possible he already knows the answer, and is doing this to test me, in which case if I anwer wrong I'll never hear the end of it. It just seems kind of web-viral to me.

This is the crystal cave of giants found in the Naica Mine, Chihuahua, Mexico. These are Selenite crystals (gypsum) and are the largest crystals ever discovered.

They are 1000 feet down in a limestone host rock where they are
mining for lead, zinc and silver.

These crystals were formed by hydrothermal fluids emanating from the
magma chambers below.The miners had to drill through the Naica fault, which they were worried would flood the mine, and this is what they discovered

//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naica_Mine Seems true enough.

Yep, they are real. I read an article about them a while back - something about needing the military to protect them from thieves and vandals.

I don't know if they're real or not, but the real issue on my mind is your profile picture, Slip. Man... you GOTTA change that sucker -- it's making me scared!

they are real, that's where they shot those scenes from Superman (his little ice cave)...actually I don't know, seems real enough to me.

kind of weird, when I got home from work tonight there was a movie on...didn't catch the name...but the military had cause the earth's core to stop and they had to travel to the center of the earth (probably the name of the movie right there) and it one part they end up in a cavern that looks JUST like this place.

Hahaha, that was a hilarious movie. They were in a geode with a shell made of Cobalt. The cobalt helped to hold back the mantle. *snickers*
