Holy crumpets! And I mean that!
Just downloaded a trial version of CS3 so I can play with it for a month (got a week off of school starting monday). Uhm I think I'm in love! What a seriously nice piece of sweetness!
I think the thing that really stands out to me above all is the streamlining of the actual function of the program. I pulled a Full size JPG and started messing around with sliders on adjustment layers as I often do in PS 7.0, using my stylus (tablet PC here). Zumps! In 7.0, I got a little bit of lag now and again and some odd things would happen as I pushed the system's abilities. When I tried the CS2 demo, I had much worse troubles (with 850MB of RAM allocated to PS with no other apps running) doing the same basic thing.
CS3 is smoooooth as a baby's behind.
No hiccups, no weird redraws, no jumpiness.
Sure, it looks kinda neat and has some nifty added features, but I'm not there yet I stick to adjustment layers for the most part still.
The next 29 days are going to be AWESOME. The thirtieth day is just plain going to SUCK. ;) |

Check out the B&W adjustment layer. You'll fall in love. :-)
If you like Lightroom but don't want to pay for it, CS3 Bridge comes a lot closer to it than the old Bridge. Looks like they "cross developed" them.
I like the user interface refinements.... things that felt klunky before are much more refined (like being able to size the panels the way I want).
I think there's a video that illustrates many of the new features of CS3. I've been using it so long I can't remember the differences any more. But I remember my jaw dropping as I watched the video.
I placed my order for the release version last night. It'll be interesting to see what changes were made since the beta.

Are you talking about the beta?
I can't seem to find the release version trial download. |

Yeah, the release version is due out mid April. So although I placed an order for the downloadable version last night, they still gave me a message saying it wouldn't actually be available until April 19th (I think that was the date).

I can't wait. I put off upgrading from CS to CS2 cause of the lack of native support for intel chipped macs. And since CS doesn't support D200 NEFs I've had to use Adobe's DNS converter.... I'm ready for it! |

I've put off moving from PS Elements to CS2, waiting for the inevitable release of CS3.
I've gotta line up a student friend to order it for me. I work with enough 20 somethings that I'm sure I can find one that could use $20 to save me $300. |

There are some fantastic new features that I have been waiting for. The new UI is much better to work with and saves a lot of real estate for smaller monitors. The refine edges feature is amazing, for separating subjects from the background it is a godsend, I love it. The black and white conversion is great. And what they have done to the brightness/contrast adjustment is long overdue, I might even start using it now :)
There are a few annoying bugs in the beta version which get to me. Not being able to see the brush size you are working with is a real pain. And most of the third party filters I use are also not compatible with CS3, so I hope that all gets sorted out when the final version is released. |

| Question - is the academic version the same version or is it a modified version? |

exactly the same -- with the restriction on being bought by students (or parents of students if K-12) and no commercial use.

| I may ask for it as a gift - my brother-in-law is a teacher (junior high). I don't think studying German on the internet and from CDs counts towards being a "student". :-) |

A lot of third party filters do not function in CS3 so I go and save the image to use these filters which I have installed in CS2.
When I open the CS3 file in CS2 I get a message saying that some adjustment layers etc are not recognized and I have to either ignore these or flatten the image. |

A PS user since 3.0, I moved from CS2 to CS3 beta when it was first announced and haven't looked back ... it's fantastic. The fact that ACR incorporates most of the adjustments found in Lightroom (which shares ACR's RAW conversion engine) makes it that much better. I pre-ordered the day CS3 was made available on Adobe's site and can't wait for the production version to begin shipping in April.

No kidding. I still don't know why there is even a Lightroom product. Everything that I found great about Lightroom has now been added to ACR. |

As slow as LR is, I still prefer the UI and some of the capabilities that it has over CS3's ACR. I'm hoping someday they are rolled together into one, but for now, I won't use ACR, but I use LR pretty regularly.

A buddy of mine with Adobe said the next iteration of PS (presumably CS4) will likely merge LR and PS, so instead of Bridge-->ACR-->PS it'll be some variation of LR-->PS.
