So... DPC isn't so terrible. Obviously a whole lot of us keep coming back again and again. Some of us rarely leave. Why do you love DPC? What makes it "work for you"? How do you feel DPC differs from other photgraphy sites in the webiverse?

Lets hear some good things!

That's it! I'm outta here...

edit: just kidding. :D

I have been OH SO TEMPTED to bail, but I calm down and as you put it in the other thread, Cindi, it is what you make of it. It all seems cyclical anyway.

I love the place... but I hate alot of the idiots on here O.o then theres the great people like sherpet, Judi and others that I can't think of right now and the 30 day challenges that really help you learn. All in all people need to stop being so narrow minded and wake up to themsleves because there bringing the site down with all there pathetic controversy yup and thats my 2 cents

Thought for the day: Its not what you take from a community, its what you bring to it that makes it special.

Heh. A brand new woman member found the nudes and her ability to create favorites.

I like being challenged to try new techniques and to stretch my mind for fresh ideas.

I like getting feedback on my work.

I like seeing the novel concepts people come up with occasionally and taking inspiration from them.

I like seeing my average scores inch up as a tangible measure of my own improvement.

I like that this place gives my Mom a place to root for me - she has an account just so she can see how I do.

I liked the camaraderie of the llama crew - I want nothing more in life than to meet and get some bear hugs from JP and Leroy, and had the pleasure of meeting Steve and Erin last week.

And the Italian photographers - I like cruising their portfolios, looking for places I recognize, have visited and want very badly to visit, fantasizing about spending a couple weeks in Venezia or Cinque Terre alone with a good camera, and I get a kick out of leaving comments in my broken Italian, especially when they're marked helpful.

more specifically ;)

I love the way people are "usually" eager to help others, even in non-photographic ways. Sure there are some idiots here but good luck finding a place without them, every family has to have a least one.

Come back? When do I ever leave?? ;-)
Honestly, what keeps me here first and foremost is the community. It is, bar none, the most inspiring group on the 'net. I can't even begin to recall all the incredible examples of the good that this community has done for their members. When someone is in need, the community reaches out.
I've also met several folks here that I'm proud to call friends; not just web-acquaintances, but folks that I hope I will keep in touch with, regardless of whether we're still hanging out here.
The DPC forums are another shining star, IMO. They are a place where I know it's always possible to discuss photography, equipment, locations, plan outings or just plain shoot the breeze without excessive flame wars, threadjacking, or other detractions.
Then, there's the photography, which never fails to inspire. The competitions here are so different from elsewhere, I believe because of the DPC "anonymous voting" and the sense of fairness that this brings to the competitions. The community makes this level playing field possible by helping new users "up the curve" and by playing a major role in rules compliance monitoring through the DQ review request system.
Finally, there's the administration. L is a lot of fun to work with and a natural leader, and the rest of the SC team is just an incredible bunch of very committed individuals. I'm honored to work with all of them, and to serve such a great community.

Was that sappy enough for y'all?

I haven't been here very long, but I did jump right into challenges. Many folks have been very kind to help, even pat me on the back for having good manners regarding saving a portfolio pic or asking a question about a comment that offered a low score. All-in-all, I am really enjoying the site as I figure out more about the side challenges and learn from the generous tutorials.

DPC is what motivated me to start thinking creatively with photography. It continues to motivate me and inspires me to take pictures of things I never would have expected to use as subjects. I don't often comment in the forums, but I read a lot and have learned so much here. I don't see any reason for me to leave anytime soon.

I spent a year or so with another photography site before this one. A horror of a site (who shall not be named). Good worked got dissed every day because the shooters were "unpopular" or not with the right clique. Mediocre work got awards again and again by the same popular shooters just because of their name recognition. Those same shooters would reuse that award winning shot again in a month and get another award. It was monotonous and there was nothing that would fix it. I still pop back there occasionally just to see what's what... it hasn't changed. Same 20 people running the site.

DPC on the other hand is so different. Getting HONEST critique is realistic because of annonymous voting, the community doesn't hold down the noobie - but helps to lift them up instead, a simple thank you is all that is ever expected for a favor... its a different world. For those who feel DPC is a failing experiment, please, spend some time elsewhere and then compare what you find.

It forces me to get out and photograph.

I work from home on the computer nearly 24/7. I'm only required to go into my office two days a week. That, combined with not enough people I consider friends and the end result is that I'm somewhat of a shut-in.

It forces me to broaden and sharpen my skills. I'm still amateur, though I have high aspirations.

I think I watch the challenges as a way to get a second opinion. I find it to be most interesting that the photos that I really like on the site, are rarely the ones winning the top spots. Most of the shots that are, in my opinion, commercially viable are usually not well received by voters, and over the top creativity usually does not score well either.

I refuse to take photos that go against my style or that I think would score well on DPC just for the sake of fitting in with the current DPC style, so perhaps its self punishment when I enter a challenge. lol.

I'm sure that most will disagree with my opinion, but it is what it is - my 2 cents.

Still is a large challenge so slow voting, as usual. But before you ask why no votes or comments have you asked how many comments / votes have you made? It takes everyone....

The tutorials.

The fact that most people here are so nice and willing to help me get better at what I love to do.

The forums :)

The side challenges :)

and of course Art Roflmao without him, it just wouldn't be the same :)

ETA: and who could forget WPL?? :)

I love this place. I'm not as active as a lot of people here, but I really enjoy studying people's nice work, reading the forums, seeing the challenge results and occasionally entering some. I've become more of a lurker I guess, but sometimes I'll try to be helpful if it's something I know a little bit about. In the forums I usually have a light-hearted attitude and occasionally make jokes, so if I ever come off sounding crass, my apologies. I'll usually try to insert a smiley just to make sure though. :-)

I enjoy the people and the willingness to share information and techniques. I use to enjoy challenges, but had to take a break from those or go completely mad. I still like to view entries and study them to try and improve my own ability or lack thereof. Love the forums and I still post pics to my portfolio. Mostly just the people...you guys rock.
