I think a lot of it has to do with the sorts of threads like these which batter morale instead of rallying together, it allows the growth of the site to be depressing rather than uplifting. We have awesome side challenges with teams and allegiances, many new rulesets to deal with different editing preferences and lots of challenges each week. What it seems people are griping about is growth. Small town hearts stuck in an urban boom. |

What I hear you saying is we need a giant group therapy thread. How does that make you feel? |

Since Judi hasn't noticed your question, allow me to answer that one.
Whilst my profile says "Seattle", that is only temporary, I AM actually an Aussie, too (from Brisbane).
Now onto the leaves........essentially NO, they don't :-(
In our state at least, almost everything looks pretty much the same all year. Once a year we get to see Jacaranda trees bloom, which is quite the sight, but other than that, very little changes.
We don't get real seasons - winter is cooler and dryer, but we don't get the very definite change that each of the four seasons brings here.
I LOVE having seasons, I don't even mind the dark, rainy, blah Seattle winter. At least I'm not boiling hot for 9 months of the year :-)
(Other people's mileage varies on that point) |

Ah, thank you! :)
I was in California (Death Valley) just now, and I SOOOOOOOO MISSED green and water and trees and all things that grow and provide shade. I didn't realize before how much I actually liked trees and flowers and all that. |

And noone noticed that Slippy has 4 Red ribbons (2nd) and 2 4ths. (4x2's + 2x4's) Something is telling me this is all Slippy's fault.

Out of curiosity, and because I'm trying to bring some fun back into the site :)
When you say, "Right on target!", are you referring to the "who hacked DPC", or "just a cycle", or "maybe it's just me"?0
And don't start yelling of whatever. I am just trying to make a little bit of fun. DPC is supposed to be for fun after all. |

Personally, I believe that the site is just a victim of its own popularity. Too much growth, too fast. There are also a number of reasons and examples of what is going on, and two different people will have two different versions of whether or not DPC is a great place to be.
So we have to be more specific on what it is we believe has made DPC a worse (or better) place to be over a period of time.
What is it that we dislike/like? What is it that you wish was different? How does this conflict or not conflict with the other users on the site that might want something different? How does it all connect and what problems can be sorted out, which ones need to be mediated, and which ones will always be a problem?
This is mini-society here. What you don't like about the site is something another person absolutely adores about the site.. and there are those problems everyone hates, and there are things pretty much nobody hates.
The trend toward being more aggressive/tactless/insensitive towards the photography on display and in challenges here is a disturbing one.
On the opposite side, there is also a trend of people being overly gentle, enabling, false-feeling, etc. towards photographs and photographers as well. Perhaps to counter the first trend. Perhaps because the sense of community here has grown too many extremely close ties and people are afraid to be honest and critical.
Both trends, in my mind, are equally as dangerous... and this is where *I* see DPC changing for the worst. You have two polarizing camps now, where .. a year back, or more, it was easier to get honest opinions and helpful critiques that allowed growth. Now, you either have people being attacked outright, or you have mediocre photography being presented to cheers and adulation... and anyone with a differing opinion risks the attacks.
frisca reminded me of a quote from Mark Twain:
Great people talk about ideas. Average people talk about things. Small people talk about other people.
And I think this runs true on DPC more than usual lately. Ideas seem to be dust in the wind now. It's all nit-pick, and there's a distracting pixel there, and a "she did this..", and all kinds of things that just further cut into what many of us used to, and still do, come here for.
There are still good things that go on here.. which is why I'm still around, and there will likely be good things happening a year from now. But sometimes if we allow ourselves to lose focus and concentrate on the things we don't enjoy so much, it'll always seem like those things are taking over.
They aren't. They'll fade like the bad things always do.. and remember that.. perhaps.. some "bad" things really aren't all that bad.. and some "good" things aren't good to a lot of people, and one may have to compromise at times so that these differences of opinion can have a chance to mesh better.

Artyste has hit it one the head...growth/popularity...
the site has lost much of its quirky, creative photography.
Part one: chase away those who don't think like you...so goodbye ergo, and many others...personally I have never felt the same about this site since then...
Part two: low votes for shots that require a bit of time to absorb, ask the viewer to think...take a look at jjbeguin's scores lately if you don't believe me...or look at how many ribbons boysetsfire has won recently...this doesn't mean that the people winning are doing anything wrong, what it means is there is a limited range of winning styles... |

I dislike the narrow-mindedness when it comes to challenge topics. The recent ice/snow debate is a perfect example. The people who insisted that snow is not ice really bothered me - not just because it really is just a form of ice, but moreso because it demonstrated exactly the sort of narrowmindedness that sometimes makes me want to run screaming from the site. This is supposed to be about art and ideas, and completely stupid arguments like whether or not a pebble is a rock totally undermine and discourage all attempts at creative thought. Is there a line to be drawn? Yes, and charliebaker does a good job at highlighting just about where it should be. Free your minds.
I dislike the lack of tact or concern for others that has been displayed lately. I don't ask that everything be all roses and puppies in the comments, but keep your ignorance and prejudices to yourself. It's really hard to want interaction with people who primarily give me the impression that they're passing judgment and snickering like it's junior high all over again. Grow up.
So that's basicaly it, what I request of the community at large. If you can imagine a connection, give the artist the benefit of the doubt. Challenge yourself to think outside the box. And for chrissakes, if you're feeling snarky, hold your damn tongue - true critique is never mean.

Well I for one believe I am responsible for my own experience. I help people when I can, ask for help when I need it, find friendship when its available and for the negative things, I basically ignore them. To have a plesant DPC experience means NOT adding fodder to the fires, instead creating the kind of atmosphere you wish to be in. When I wear my "what works for me" goggles, I find DPC a very friendly and happy place to be.
Granted, sometimes I get sucked into a juicy debate, but its never meant in hate or anger, just a way to compare opinions with others and at the end of the day no feelings are hurt.

It may be just me, but I feel that one vital aspect of the site has been especially lacking in the past half-year or so. I feel that despite my involvement and lurking that I really have not learned terribly much about photography and processing, etc. from DPC lately. When I first came here, yes I was a much less-skilled photographer, but I learned so much from the forums, from comments, from looking at photos from a wide range of abilities in photographers. Now it seems that the learning aspect of it is gone and I feel that I enter the occasional challenge for the heck of it, not expecting to get anything out of it except maybe the pleasure of getting above 6. And it is becoming less and less appealing to enter challenges, an example being that for the first time in my history at DPC in 123 challenges I received 1 single comment on a challenge image. The forums are grumbly and although there is help and critique, it is sparse.
Now I highly, highly, don't believe that this lack of learning is because I can no longer learn anything about photography. That, obviously is ludacris. So it must be something with the DPC dynamic and I feel this may attribute to the feelings inherent in this thread.
Then again, it could also just be me. Any thoughts?
Lee
