that's hard.
when I start taking photos again I'll try to use more light, I think it will help.

Another post from Canon-land, so maybe it's not applicable to your camera. I found that my camera's default settings were set for too much contrast in the images, so pushing the exposure was blowing the highlights. So, in the image settings, I've reduced the contrast a little. This will help let me push the exposure a little higher without blowing the highlights.

I just realised that if you are shooting raw, then this is irrelevant. Never mind... :)

Just touching the highlights I think is OK in very small amounts. But if you are getting larger areas, then it's bad. It all depends on the shot. I don't want to live in fear of blowing highlights, because then all my shots will be dark. I'm particularly noticing it with flash shots and outdoor shots with direct sunlit objects. There's always something that blows out.

I've just read the following in one d50 review:

"The D50 produces two types of files: JPEG and Compressed NEF...
The Compressed NEF format is the only one that comes close to retaining the full data set the D50 is capable of acquiring. I say "close to retaining" because the compression scheme Nikon uses is not lossless..."

from this website

but I always thought those "nef" files are absolutely not compressed and I can make any adjustments I want. they say this camera is built for amateurs who won't use any special raw software to convert files that's why it's not so important if the files are compressed or not.
I don't like it. can quality of my photos be worse because of this issue?

Technically Nikon's NEF format is not lossless HOWEVER it is very good so I doubt you'd notice unless you were really looking for it. I don't think that's the problem you are seeing.
