I'm hoping the peeps who have owned, or still do own both of these lens can help me out here. I currently use the 50mm 1.8 lens...love the sharpness, the build doesn't bother me, but the focusing as of late is driving me nuts! I've been photographing a lot of little ones lately and keep missing some really great shots because the lens can't focus quick enough.

So...my question is...

Does the 50mm 1.4 have more spunk to go along with the spunky wee critters I'm trying to photograph? I'd LOVE to get the 1.2 but that simply isn't in the budget right now and I have contemplated the 85mm 1.8 but it's a bit long for what I'm doing. I'd love to hear from anyone who has had experience with BOTH of the lens.

Thanks! : }

Edit to say: looking for responses comparing the 50 1.8 and 50 1.4...that's all...thanks again.

How much money are you willing to spend?

Own both. The 1.4 focuses a hell of a lot faster.

I have the money for a 50 1.4, so that's not a problem.

Another option - Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM

As mentioned in my original post...I don't have the money for the 50mm 1.2 L so the 85mm 1.2L is REALLY beyond my current budget...also the 85mm is a bit long for what I do...I like to get right in there with the kids while they're being goofy.

Additionally, the 85 1.2 is quite a bit slower focussing than the 50mm from my experience.

Thanks for the response...I was hoping the hear that...also the "clunking" of the 1.8 as it focuses is starting to work my last nerve.
