I'll have to bow out of this one then, the weekend of May 18th is my big girls weekend in Door County. We've been doing it for the 10yrs. Let me know if another weekend comes up!

I can still give some great places to shoot on the upper eastside, if you'd like.

Could those of us who arrive for sunrise find street parking around the zoo, and then go in one vehicle to the sunrise shoot? That way, we'd potentially have to park only one car in paid zoo parking when it opens. Street parking should be relatively light at 4:00 AM.

I volunteer my van for the duties. I can seat 7 including myself.

I would have had lens envy last year but this year I am packing some sweet glass.

do they have any parking restrictions on bluemound rd? like No Parking 2AM - 6AM anyone know? If not there will be plenty of open places along that stretch of road just west of the main entrance.

Are we set on the date May 19th ?

Terri I will keep your name on the list just incase the date changes.

I know a lot of people have already chimed in in favor of May 19, but May 12 could work for me too, in order to accommodate Terri.

I will second John on that. I think the weather would be suitable May 12th. Especially with the past few days being in the mid 60s around here. Today I am wearing summer clothing for the first time this year.

Either way it should work for me
03/24/2007 05:26:44 PM · #34
Lets wait to see if the 12th is good for Terri before we make any definate changes. I will keep both dates open on my calander until we have the date selected.
03/24/2007 05:36:02 PM · #35
I'll also keep both dates open if at all possible. It's OK by me if we play it by ear for the 12th, and consider the 19th the "rain date."
I don't rightly recall what the parking restrictions are on Blue Mound Rd. itself, but I know in the last few years they have put up some awful restrictive zones on the residential streets nearby, so those won't be an option. Meeting near the zoo and car-pooling downtown would be a good idea; it's a nice central location, and getting that early should ensure that we find some street parking *somewhere.* I'll try to check out the parking situation if I'm in the area over the next couple weeks.

I used to have a friend that lived on 113th St 3 doors north of Bluemound Rd. He learned how to ride his Bike in the Zoo Parking Lot. Unfortunately he moved to Minnesota about 5 years ago and I am 90% sure the family house on 113th has since been sold. But I will make a couple of phone calls this week and see if they still live there. If so we could park there It is basically right across the road from the Zoo's main gates.

I am going to plan on the 12th and hold the 19th open for raindate.

I am now planning the 12th and holding the 19th as a rain date. Woo-hoo!

Oh...you all are the best! If it works for everyone, I will mark the 12th on the calendar! I'm so excited...it's not often I have the opportunity to go out and shoot with other photographers! I'm usually surrounded by hubby and kids...begging to move on when I find something I want to spend some time shooting!

I see what you mean. When hubby says to move on, it's time to move on!

You guys are killing me!! LOL. Hubby does carry my bag...but, he doesn't look like that! That was a body builder that wanted shots for his book! He ended up with 26-body shots...and that one I asked for at the end of the shoot. My favorite.

The weather here the past few days has been stunning to say the least. If we keep this pace, By May 12th we could have some very warm days.

I talked to my friend yesterday He is still living in St Paul and told me that his mom sold the house about 2 years ago and moved up north. So that idea is in the trash. Too bad because it is only a few minutes walk to the zoo.

My wife is going to check at work today to see if they have any discount coupons for the Zoo and The Domes. Might be able to save a few dollars.

Do we have anyone who can not make it on the 12th ?

03/26/2007 06:03:30 PM · #43
I'd be up for this too, but I have no car here in Milwaukee and no way to get around (other than by foot). If you guys are going to the art museum, I'd definitely be up for it since it's walking distance from school. The domes are great, I had pictures from there in my portfolio but my membership expired...need to renew. May 19th would not work for me since it's the weekend before finals and all, but I'd probably be in for the 12th if I can find a car or someone to drive me. This would make it 2 GTG for me this year alone! (Minneapolis and Milwaukee)

Hey Sameer,
I take it you are living on-campus at Mozee? If so, and you need a ride, you could hitch with me. I could pick you up at the campus, I do know the place (I'm a '91 grad).

That would be great if you could do that, I'll have to make sure the class work allows this trip to begin with so I'll have to let you know. Thanks for the offer!

Sameer, your name has been added to the list.

We are starting to get alot of names will be great if everyone on the list can make it.
03/31/2007 01:32:28 PM · #47
Thought I would give this a bump for anyone who may not have seen it yet and would like to be included.

Right now we have 12 people on the list.

And a Date of May 12th

meeting early somewhere by The Lakefront, then Breakfast, after that The Zoo and then maybe The Domes. Kirbic have you contacted the Domes about the photography?

How about a drive up to Holy Hill. I've never been but I've always wanted to shoot there. Maybe around sunset, or an alternative sunrise location??
03/31/2007 02:04:22 PM · #49
that would be ok too. Holy Hill is usually not too busy on Saturdays. Catching a Sunrise from Holy Hill could be a problem. But the Sunsets could be awesome . I have driven home from Hartford many times at sunset and have seen some beauties.

Above taken about 5 miles north west of Holy Hill just off Hyw 60

The eastern skyline is well blocked by the church and hill I am not sure we could get access to the points where we would be able to see to the east with a nice view.
This was taken facing north east.

The only place I believe you can see to the east clearly is from the top of the tower on the right side of the church if facing the front.
The tower on the left is not open to the public. on calm days you can go up in the right/south tower for 25 Cents a major climb though.

Just to be clear, I'm more interested in taking pictures of the grounds than from the grounds. Since I've never been there, I'm not familiar with land around it.

Your shot

Is just what I have in mind. Low sun behind me, golden light on the hills, trees, and cathedral. Wowza.
