I've just recently started getting into portrait photography and I was wondering if anyone would recommend getting the alien bee b800 beginner kit to start with. I'm using a rebel xt. Also is anyone else using this light kit? What do you think of it, etc.

I bought the Digibee kit with the ABS found here:
//www.alienbees.com/digi.html

I couldn't be happier with them. PM idnic she is our house pro. She did recommend I get the AB400 and I am 100% happy.

Hi there! I'm Cindi ;)

Go with the AB kit, you won't regret it. But seriously, unless you have studio space the size of a basketball court, you don't need the AB800s. A pair of AB400s are a great start for a smallish (home-based) studio and you can always add to your kit later on if you need more lights.

Yeah the 800s are pretty strong for a small room. I have them set up in our Living room right now. All at lowest setting have to use about F/5.6 - F/6.3 with 1/60 shutter still a little overexposed but I am getting there. I think I need to defuse the light a bit more.

Awesome, thanks for the quick reply and advice. I think I'll definately look into getting the DigiBee kit now.

Do you guys have any other suggestions or tips for someone who is just starting to get into Portrait photography and studio lights?
