I'm looking at getting the Sigma 17-70 (F2.8-4.5) lens as my main lens for a Canon 400D. Does anyone have any comments? I'd prefer a longer range, more like 17-120, but there don't seem to be any good lenses in this range. I don't want to spend TOO much, and the 17-70 fits nicely in the budget.

One concern is whether the flash will be shadowed by such a large lens, particularly at wide angle end. The lens is around 79mm diam, and 84mm long, so it's no small puppy.

Also, if anyone knows how this lens goes w.r.t. autofocus, I'd be interested to know how good it is. After testing the 18-200, I'm aware of the autofocus as a potential problem.

Thanks for your help.

(edit to add aperture for 17-70)

A friend of mine just bought this lens an I have a little experience with it. Here's a couple of points:

1. At 17mm your on board flash should still cover most, if not all of the frame. However, at 70mm the lens barrel extends and may cast a shadow on your image.

2. The autofocus speed on that lens goes with the price... although it is accurate and doesn't search much, if you're used to fast focusing this lens is not for you.

However it is a good lens and provides some sharp images, but if you can afford something a little better I'd suggest going for that.

My 2c.

Am I used to fast focusing? I dunno. :) I'm used to a P&S - Panasonic FZ5. Yes, this camera focuses very fast for a P&S, but I don't know how it compares to an SLR. The SLR is arriving in the next few days.

Well, to seek it's full range of focus this lens takes just over a second, which is not slow but if you're shooting things that move you'll run into problems. I'd suggest that if you know anyone that has this lens, or a similar one that you give it a try and see if it suits you.
