I wanted to enter Color Portrait II. So I place an ad on craigslist looking for a model. I get a response and we swap emails. We agree on time and place. I get there and proceed to wait for an hour. That's right she's a no show.
My question is, do I email her and complain? Or just blow her off? Maybe something came up. So I'm not sure if I should pursue it any further or drop it.
I'm a bit miffed because I have an idea that I think would do well and can't enter now. |

I have always gone on my word, i do what i say i am going to do...If a persons word is not enough, it says alot about their character. Maybe something did come up, but it is only a quick phone call or email to let you know..
I say..let it go..Learn from it.. |

I think if something did come up, it is her responsibility to contact you. I'd just drop it. |

Unfortunately, your story seems to be more the rule than the exception on Craigslist. Just keep a list of people who have stood you up and make sure not to contact them again. Good luck with your next shoot!

I've had 3 models do that to me, all from OMP. But I don't think it's an OMP or a craigslist problem. It's just par for the course for new models.
Some, I think, get nervous. Some, perhaps, worry about physically meeting a total stranger they've only just met on the internet. For that matter, I don't think I'd let *my* girls meet someone they only met on the internet.
Some girls just join up to help improve their self esteem. And they don't even need to show up. Just knowing you "wanted" to shoot them is good enough.
For TFP/TFCD work, I'd say, let it be. It'll happen again. If you hired her and she didn't show up, then that's another story.

Yeah, I pretty much dropped it. My first post was more out of frustration and I needed to gripe.
It was to be in a public place, I advised her to bring a friend. She saw my web site. Really, I'm not a dirty old man looking for a date. But I understand being nervous on their part.
On the plus side, she's the first one out of three to not show. |

to many 'want to be' models are flakes. They don't care they are not in it for anything other than the title even though they aren't... Ya know?
Anyway, What I do with flaky models, is write them off and if they want to shoot with me in the future they pay.
I will send a message stating I believed we had an appointment scheduled on such and such day at such and such time, and that is is unfortunate that something more important came up, and I wish them luck in the future.
A few have begged for second chances, but they never follow through. I tell them to give me a time and place and they never do, but I never wait as well. There are plenty of others out there and the right one will come along.

I was contacted by a young model a couple of weeks ago about doing TFCD shoot so we were working on setting up a date and then WHAM! color portrait came up and I was a bit more interested in getting it done. :) The shoot is for tomorrow afternoon (last minute Jen, that's me) :) Hopefully, she won't cancel but she is young and having to bring a parent along to sign releases and such so the chances I think are slimmer. Young models are usually really excited about doing shoots and since parents are involved they are less likely to bail.
So far, I've only had one no show and it was for a couples Lifestyle type shoot. The male model was someone I'd worked with a few times, the female model was new to me. So myself, Bob and the Make-up artist are sitting around waiting, waiting, waiting. No show, we ended up with good stuff anyways so no worries but annoying as all heck. Maybe something to think about for the future, book two models then when one doesn't show you've got a back-up. LOL! :)
Sorry to hear about the lame model and the blown shoot Marc. :(

The majority of models I attempt to work with flake on me. Some I have contacted on a TFP basis and some paid. But still the majority flake. Even the so called professional ones. Its not worth your time and the aggravation to email or call her.....and odds are she doesn't care. |

If I were you I would book three at a time and that gives you some flexability. I have had good luck from Craig's list - found a fabulous make-up artist (Lynn Wise) and hair stylist (Ericka) and a few good models so to me it's been a great resource.. also shot a few weddings from bookings on Craig's list. : ) |

The cousin of a VERY good friend of mind was modelling in Los Angeles and was murdered in cold blood by a reputable photographer. I think this happened in 2004 so not a long time ago.
As a female I wouldn't go anywhere alone to meet someone I didn't know...I can't imagine being a young model facing all the potentially perverted people wanting to get a look at them.

Well I have never had one not show on me but I always insist that they bring someone with them. Better for me cuase I get someone to hold all my stuff.

This is the exact reason why you request ALL models (male or female) come with a friend or someone else. The photographer should also have someone present in my mind. Things could easily go either way and you could have people pretending to be models, get in your studio and hold you up and take all your gear. |

You can't expect much from craigslist. There are better resources if you're trying to find serious models.

I used to have a site on OMP and now do most of my model contacts through MM (modelmayhem.com), as I have a site there. I know many people deal with craigslist and many other places to find models or photographers. One item that keeps coming up on the forums in MM is how as photographers we need a list for models who "flake". So we can go to that list and know that model is not reliable. Is craigslist a good place to start something like that? Anyone have ideas?

Best place to start a blacklist would be offline. If it must be online blacklist than you should post it on your own site. You should know from MM it frowned upon to 'call' people out publicly.
I have my list for myself of models I won't work with. If anyone asks about models in my area I can tell them.

Shoot, im lucky to get one at a time. It is not easy for me to find models... be scary white guy with a bald head... nope no one likes me. I have no luck on Myspace, craiglist, or other.. most my models have come from ModelMayhem and they are few and far between.

I'm starting to get my own little blacklist too. I know MM frowns upon such a list, which is primarily why I was looking at some 3rd party site to start a list like this |

It's just really bad form to 'publicly' out someone. Thats why I keep it all off-line.
