I've just won a new Canon 400D, which I'm really stoked about. I've been drooling over this camera for a long time now, and hadn't managed to convince my wife that we needed one. So, I'm really looking forward to getting the camera...

Unfortunately, the prize is a body only, which I think is really wierd for a competition, but that's the way it is.

Anyway, I'm looking at my first lens, and considering the Sigma 18-200. I'm used to a baby superzoom 12x camera with a fish-eye 0.4x add-on, so I think I'll really appreciate the long zoom range. Now, I've seen announcements for an optical stabilised version of this lens, but none of the local suppliers have any pricing information for the stabilised version.

Is this lens real? Has anyone got one? I'm from Australia. Is this lens possibly only available overseas? Does anyone know rough pricing for this lens? Maybe it's not available anywhere?

This lens was announced some time ago, and announced again at PMA 2007 recently. I guess it will soon hit the shops.

IMO, 18-200 is too big a range. And, being f6.3 at 200mm isn't that great either. If oyu don't have alot to spend, go for the kit 18-55 and somethng like the sigma 70-300 APO. You get macro 1:2 thrown in as well.

The whole point of an SLR is to change lenses!
(Unless you have the great 18-200 by Nikon :-) )

Also consider the very good sigma 17-70mm and great budget 70-300mm apo macro. You will can better results from these 2 and better range.
I used to own a sigma 18-125, it was quite sharp but had very hit and miss focusing.

Hmm, yes, thank you for the replies. I tried one out in the shop today. Only a quick test out, but now that you mention it, focussing was definitely an issue. Yes, in a shopping centre. Maybe it works better outdoors. But, I certainly think this will bug me very quickly.

Back to the good ol' beginner's question - "I'm getting an SLR - what lenses should I get?" :) How many times does that get posted here?

Well, I'm set on the Canon 50mm 1.8, and the Sigma 10-22 as a future aquirement. And a long lens like a 70-300 is certainly on the cards sometime.

Do you think the Sigma 70-300 APO compares favourably against the Canon version? My biggest gripe with both of these is the lack of inner focusing. I'm very used to using a polarising filter on my P&S, and would very much miss this if I couldn't use it.

I'm having a look at the Sigma 17-70 at the moment - it certainly looks like a nice lens - great reviews!

I good place for lens reviews is PhotoZone

Since you shoot Canon you could also try The Digital Picture

Yes, I've been looking at Photozone all night. :) Oh look at the time - it's midnight - pumpkin time. Thank you Mark for the Sigma 17-70 recommendation. That looks like a huge step-up from the Canon kit lens, with not too pricey a tag. The only drawback is the size, but I think I'm just going to learn to live with a bigger camera.

Any comments on the focus performance/accuracy of the Sigma 17-70?

Another place I have found very informative when it comes to lenses is www.slrgear.com. Here is the link to their extensive Sigma 17-70 review:

Definitely look at the "blur plot", fot this one and other lenses you are considering.

Another useful site is //www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/. Here thay don't do any testing, but hava A LOT of user reviews.
