I will be attending Winter Music Fest in Miami next week. One of the events that I will be shooting is a Night Tennis / Fashion Show. This is basically a tennis match under black lights with lots of glow in the dark colors.

//www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=us&lc=en&ver=4000&template=pm1_1&zone=pm&mcid=111

If you need more of an idea click the link above, then click "night tennis", then click "Action" and you will see what I am talking about.

I plan to take my Canon 5d and a 50mm 1.4 lens and a 70-200mm 2.8 IS lens as I will be mostly in a run and gun mode. I am assuming the 70-200mm will be the lens I end up using because I have no idea how close to the action I can get.

Any tips on how to get usable shots for this event?

Thanks for the help

edit: to fix link

wicked cool... I've shot under black light, but they've always been longish exposures!!! Good luck, I have NO idea how you are going to capture that action... wide open very high ISO, and a lot of luck!!!

use a flash with second/rear curtain sync and drag the shutter.

i have no clue who will be playing tennis. Don't think there are any big names. Seems like a thousand DJ's are attending winter music fest. This is my first time for this event so I have no idea what to expect. I've done SXSW in Austin several times but that was mostly bands in clubs. I think this will be very different.

Sorry you can't make it!

i thought about that but I don't think I will be allowed to use a flash.

Another question.... What white balance setting should i use? I can input a specific color temp. Does anyone know the color temp of black lights?

edit: to add WB question

I would suggest shooting RAW... but if memory serves, I used "Fluorescent" for my WB.

ETA: I wouldn't suggest using a flash (if it's even allowed)... I would imagine it'll kill the black light effect... even with rear curtain sync and dragging the shutter.

That looks like a really interesting event, but you're certainly going to have one heck of a time photographing it, I would bet.

I mean, it's hard enough to get decent action shots indoors in normal lighting, let alone under black lights.

Even with the highest of ISO settings and a really fast lens, I would be very surprised if you can get anything decent out of it.

I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see how it'll be realistically possible to get anything good out of this. You might just try setting your camera on a tripod, do a long exposure to try to catch the motion of it all, along with the stuff that will be stationary and lit up, like the net.

I was thinking the same thing... you would still end up with some really cool shots....

i think it would depend on the how you use the ambient light in combination with the flash.

i've never shot a blacklight tennis match - didn't even know such a thing existed, but in a dark area with moving people - it's the method i tend to use.
