Hey guys. I ordered a large (10' X 20') vinyl backdrop a few weeks ago and wanted to give you an idea how these work in case you've also been looking at them.
First - I ordered mine from backdropoutlet.com. It was on sale, so was under $200 (the cost of 3 rolls of paper with shipping). Also, it feels like a heavy canvas with a plastic-type backing, but hangs more like fabric than vinyl. And - it came folded!- Took 2 weeks of hanging before the fold lines came out.
Pros:
Bright white
Heavy enough to hang nicely and stop light passing through
You can clean it with soap & water
Matte finish so not a glare issue
The backing "sticks" to the floor so you don't have shifting problems
Much lighter weight than a roll of paper
Cons:
Because it hangs like a fabric, its kinda hard to keep it hanging perfectly straight (wrinkle-free)
With the matte finish, you need a bit more light to get it perfectly white in your shots (light isn't bouncing around like off paper)
Tough to steam if it is wrinkled - but not impossible
I had a very active session yesterday that lasted over 3 hours. It included a LOT of feet and jumping, etc., on the backdrop and did NO damage save a few footprints that came right off with a damp sponge.
Overall I'm pleased with the vinyl and think it is a good alternative to rolled paper backdrops. If it lasts 3 times as long as paper it will have paid for itself - anything after that is gravy! :)
I will share some pics with it after I've chosen any challenge entries for this week. Feel free to post or PM if you have other specific questions.

Actually I have been using that same backdrop for quite some time now. Yes it does take more light but it is worth it especially with kids and pets and the way they move around...you have room to move in your result. It was actually used in my furniture image...but you wouldn't know it.

Cool, didn't know you had the same one. How has it been cleaning it? Showing any wear?

| Check in fabric stores in the upholstery department. One around here has vinyl on 54-inch rolls for between $6.99 - 14.99 USD/yard ... that might be wide enough for some appplications, and should be crease-free. |

I have the same one you do, and while it is a nice starter... I think I am going to look into one from Denny's. I know a few people who have one from there, and they said they are very thick and don't wrinkle! Hooray!!! That is what I need! I basically have to throw mine in the dryer before every use, or it looks horrible. The wrinkles suck!
ETA - As long as I am doing High key and can blow it out... the wrinkles are a pain. If I get them blown out enough... no prob! :)

I leave mine hanging on the ceiling all the time. I did notice that their see through coloured cloths do leave their colour on the white when they are hanging against it...!
