Would it be beneficial to run a TIFF through NI before you tonemap? I was thinking it might. However, I have the version of NI that saves TIFFs in 8-bit, so maybe that's a drawback.

Opinions?

Hmmmm... good question.

Normally, you'd want to perform noise reduction on a duplicate layer of your original early in your workflow. But if you have to convert to 8-bit to do that then maybe you should wait until after you've saved your post processed master file and perform noise reduction only when producing an output file from it.

Agreed... I own NI Pro version 5.5 and performed the experiment starting with a RAW image converted with PS and perform NI noise reduction and saved as .tiff as a 16-bit Prophoto color space image. Works just fine.

Though I suspect that noise is not a big problem with your D5 I'd still recommend springing for the cost of the NI pro version. Not only does it allow you to accomnplish your goal but has the added feature that you get a plugin that works seamlessly within PS and allows you to perform noise reduction on selections. That is nice and the feature I like best. :)
