I'm putting together a new rig in the near future and have read inconclusively that 32 bit Windows machines cannot address 4 gigs.
The most they will recognize is 3GB?
I don't want to go 64bit Vista yet b/c of the horrid hardware driver support.
Does anyone know of this limitation?

This article seems to cover all aspects of this, and it appears that the max you can squeeze on 32bit 'doze is 3gb, yet this one seems to say that it can use it via PAE...

When using that much memory 1G is allocated solely for the OS to manage internally. The other 3G is available for use by applications, though no single application can use more than 2G.

That's why you only see 3G available. Vista might change that, but I don't think so. (I honestly don't have any information one way or the other.)

For Windows XP the maximum Physical Memory is 4GB. The 2GB/3GB limit is for Virtual memory addresses. The Physical Address Extension(PAE) is for the 32-bit server operating systems that will allow them to utilize upto 32GB of physical memory. Windows XP does not support PAE, so 4GB is the max right now.

32-bit Vista is in the same boat. I have 4gig in my machine, but only 3gig is recognized and used by Vista. I'll wait for more drivers to appear before I test the 64-bit waters.

Thanks for the replies.
Does Photoshop benefit from a 64 bit OS?
I know that CS2 is 32 bit and have read that CS3 will also be 32 bit.
I know that PS benefits from multi-proc but are there any performance gains from a 64bit OS?

If there are, what are your thoughts on a dual-boot machine, 64 Vista for photo editing and either 32 Vista or XP Pro for general use?

Hmmm... I went googling for an answer and this is what I came up with:
