My girlfriend's friend is getting married this year and they want to get some engagement photos taken for the announcements. I'm not sure what to charge them for the shoot and prints though. What's the industry standard for this type of shoot? Thanks.

there is no industry standard. some people charge $50, some charge $1500, some can charge more. it depends on where you live, how good you are, how much of a reputation and portfolio you have, and how much the bride can afford to spend.

look up photography studios in your local phonebook, then see if they have websites where you can get the local rates. if you can't get their rates online, call them and ask them what they charge.

i really do admire your desire to make a go at this, and i don't mean to dampen your enthusiasm. i just want you to do your homework where you live. you can get a lot of great feedback here at dpc, but you've got to make things work for yourself where you are--and the only way you're going to do that is by getting out there and doing it. talk to the people that are doing it where you live, that are doing what it is that you want to do. check out the other photographer's galleries and prices; that will give you a better idea than we can.

I used to charge separately for each shoot - the engagement shoot, the bridals, the wedding, etc.

I used to NEVER get to shoot the engagement pictures. It was very frustrating! It's the funnest, least stressful shoot of the whole wedding process.

Now I charge for packages and I go out of my way to tell people that the engagement shoot is FREE. And every time someone tells me that they have an Uncle Joe that plans to do the engagement shoot, I re-iterate that the engagement shoot is FREE. And that even if Uncle Joe does the pictures, I'd love to accompany them and get some of my own at the same time (as album filler, as slide show filler, etc).

I have yet to have anyone turn me down. (I also have yet to run into Uncle Joe)

The thing is, I like to run a slide show at the reception. On the slide show will be the engagement pictures and bridals. If I don't shoot the engagement pictures, then I really don't have much to show, unless the wedding and reception are at least a few hours apart so that I can get the wedding pictures into the slide show as well.

And the thing is, the slide show is like "free advertising" for me. So if I don't run it, then I'm losing out on something that is very valuable to me. And that makes that "free engagement shoot" all the more valuable to me.
