I just bought an LG LCD monitor. Everything right now looks way too bright. I know I need to calibrate this puppy to get the results I want. Can someone please explain how to do this. Thank you. |

There is a free program Adobe makes (I forget the name). However, it never did get me calibrated right. I finally purchased a Spyder Calibrator. For the first time in my life I print exactly what is shown on my screen.
I used to have problems with a color "cast" or "tint" coming out on my prints that was not showing on the screen. Now I never get that cast.
If you plan on printing or entering challenges, I'd get a spyder new or maybe pick up one on ebay.

x2 on the Pantone Spyder.
I use Apple Colorsync monitors at home and work, and I always thought the colour was pretty true until I used the Spyder. A really easy, quick way to get excellent calibration. It's a couple hundred bucks, but if you're doing lots of Photoshop work, etc. it's definitely worth it. |

Just fiddle with it until it looks the way you want it.
Not a very good approach, but without the hardware, it's about as good as you'll get. |

Go to one of the current challenge pictures that are currently up for a vote. Notice at the bottom of the picture is a bar that goes from white to black.
While looking at that bar, adjust your contrast and brightness. Your monitor should be able to see distinct squares all the way across. If your squares on the "white" side or the "dark" side are running together then your monitor needs more adjusting. Adjust the contrast and brightness until you can see all or most of the squares.
