I am shooting at a nightclub tonight and was just wandering if anyone have any tips. I was thinking about bringing my white background and alienbees, but it might be too big of a hassle, but I do have the SB-600 speedflash. Someone told me that my 50mm would do the trick, I also have the 18-70mm also for my wide. I am asking for tips because this party will put my name out as far as business. |

You're shooting at a nightclub, OK. What kind of pics are you planning to shoot?

Are you taking shots of their heads or more full crops? |

I would ask the nightclub if they have room for that kind of setup. Remember who you are shooting for. If it's for the night club, they may want to have the scenery and background be of the night club. If you used a backdrop it takes the photo's out of the environment. Ambient lighting mixed with flash may be your best bet. Try taking allot of candids with 2nd curtain synch as well.

I want more full body shots because everyone is going to show off their dressing skills. Especially the women with the high heels and everything. How can I achieve full body shots with the 50mm or the 18-70 mm??????? |

Seriously, I think you should just wander the club with your camera and flash. When you take a shot, be sure to hand out your card and let people know how to look at the images later and how to contact you to order prints later.
I think that in all likelihood, setting up equipment would be a PITA since someone would have to babysit your gear to keep people from messing with it and most people wouldn't want studio pics anyway to remember their night out. If you shoot people against a plain background, it removes all of the context from the shot. |

Use a zoom. The 50mm might screw you if space gets tight and you need to move around in a packed nightclub.
If you have a set area where you can shoot it could work out well but I'm betting you'll need to be flexible most of the time. |

My issue is 95% of your images wont look like your in a Night Club or Bar. Once that flash goes of your dark environment is now lighted.
Thats why i want ISO 3200 so bad. It might get a bit noisy but at least i got the damn picture.

thanks a lot for the replies. I surely appreciated. I think I will only take my 18-70mm and maybe the 50mm1.8d. My partner called and told me that is pretty dark in the club. |

take all your lenses...it won't cost you anything extra and you might find that you'll need some distance with your long lens. |

Get there early-ish before the dance floor gets packed, so you can move around the floor and get full-length shots of people dancing. As the dance floor gets crowded it will be hard to impossible to get those shots unless you're on the outskirts. So move out there later when it gets packed. You can also stand on a chair, stage, or a split level (if they have one) to get above shots of the whole crowd jumping. Be sure to have the DJ or the bar in the background too instead of a side with just a plain wall. If the DJ has some nice lights, use them to your advantage and time the shot when his lights are hitting what your shooting. Have fun! |
