I saw the original back in the early 60s' - it was called 'The 300 Spartans' it was/is one of my fav films. I saw the trailer for '300' at the cinema lately and it looked excellent - plan to see it soon

I just finished the book "gates of fire". Its historical fiction about the battle of thremopaply(sp?). It was a great book and now I'm pumped up to see the movie. This weekend, for sure. |

Aparently the whole movie was filmed in an area teh size a little bit larger than a highschool gym. Green screen galore. The actors also trained for 8 months, and the film took more then a years worth of editing.
edit: spelling

I'm anxious to see it, so is my 14yo son.
...unlike the completely unnecessary TMNT. :( |

My son and his date is going tomorrow night. We already have the tickets. Luckily my wife works at a bank and gets discount tickets for $5.00. |

I think a lot of people might be offended with it as the historical facts of the episode bear little relation to what has ended up on the screen! However as a cinema experience the special effects look outstanding.

I have a friend who is in the movie, we spent many years together in London (where he still lives) and I usually shoot all his casting pics and film his screen tests too (including this one)
his name is Andrew Tiernan A great guy on and off the stage. He plays the Hunchback and told me the make up took 5 hours and it was so hot inside there he lost a ton of weight. He's in the States right now doing some interviews about it..
Im gonna wait to go and watch it with him and his good lady at his home on DVD when he gets back.

Just got back from seeing it: high on graphic, low on content (imo). |

Yeah, looks very stylized (which might be a reason to see it, maybe). For all considering seeing it, remember that it is EXTREMELY violent! Star article: favourable, but bloody. Described in that article as simultaneously homoerotic and homophobic, "a fanboy's wet dream", the kind of movie where dead bodies really are stacked up like cordwood, etc. |

That's what a friend told me. She said it was ok, but definitely not a must-see.

Omg i just saw this last night! This is seriously a contender for my top 5 favorite movies ever! The CG was amazing, they did a killer job, the fight scenes were insane, the movie was done so well...Bah.. cant say enough! Im buying it when it comes out.
edit: Maybe its just cuz im a 19yr old guy, but the lack of content didn't bother me, 90% blood % gore = awsome :P

Amazing movie... a word of advice to all those who have yet to see it: IMAX. There is nothing cooler than 6 story tall Spartans killing everything in their path!
I would consider it a must-see, especially for alot of the photographers here. The graphic novel style reminds me alot of some of the better PP artists around here, especially the landscapes.
For the record, I thought Sin City was mediocre at best. 300 is much, much better. |

I wouldn't consider it a must-see, but it's definately cool if you're into fighting and cool cinematography.
The girls I was with said afterwards that they had never felt so manly in their lives. |

Was it shot for IMAX though? I've seen some movies that work in that format and others that are horrible. In other words when they have close ups are they really macro shots of facial pores the size of footballs?
Regardless of format this is a must see movie for me. Cinematography and sound are the only reasons to see a movie in the theaters, IMO. |

Yeah, to be fair, it wasn't true IMAX. They kept the aspect ratio in the standard widescreen format, so the entire screen wasn't used...but it was still twice as big as the normal big(gest) screens, and the sound... oh my god, the sound!
So in summary, I see your point, but have no fears: 300 is pure awesome in IMAX. No degradation of quality whatsoever.
Did I mention it sounds at least 8000x better? |
