I popped up one of the many South Wales valleys today and took a rough panoramic. This is roughly 10 mins from my front door.

Nice one. Was this a composite of several images?

Axle, I counted a fair few sheep there, Boyo. That is a nice image. The two parallel valleys on the right are rather deepish. Where is this located?

It was a composite of 15 images taken on top of one of the Welsh valleys near Bridgend South Wales.

Hey Ax,

I meant to ask, Did you stich these manually or do you use software - If so what?

Cheers,
AL.

Ah, Bridgend. It would be nice if the sky had some character, cloudy, stormy or such.

I only used Photoshop CS2, photomerge feature, it works but is a bit sloppy. I have not tried any other software yet.

I know what you mean. We suffer, in this area, from very murky weather and on occasion when the weather breaks and the sun shines, it does tend to present an appealing cloud formation.

These are a few shot i took shortly after the panoramic.

The clouds in the first example above have been manipulated. Higher up in the sky, the clouds looked visually more appealing and had a more vibrant colour, so i took a snap of the clouds on their own, and dropped them lowere behind the valleys for a better effect. I think they blend in quite well, but i might be bias.

The second example above are with the natural clouds and whilst the shot is nice, i didnt need the clouds to be a main vocal point so did not worry too much about them.

I am hoping to pop out shortly and take a drive back up that way to concentrate on a few more shots but the cloud cover is nto great, but will see what i can come back with.

There is some software bundled with canon cameras called 'photostich' that I've used a few times, its a bit crude but works ok!

Thats a really nice stitch BTW!!! I had a similar one (not nearly as nice!) printed at DPCPrints and it looked stunning! Maybe worth thinking about ;)

Ok this is going to be difficult to explain because it is the way it sounds as well as reads.

The closest i can think of right now is: 'Bulk' but the 'k' at the end is not pronounced as strong.

I drove through Wales from north to south in a day a couple of years ago, before I got into digital photography and before I started managing my shots in anything but a shoebox. It was absolutely beautiful. Bwlch is actually a simple name compared to some of the others that I saw that day.

I was just looking at an advertisement for low airfares to the U.K., but travel must be completed by May 27 and my schedule is full of travel through July. I'd like to go back over there sometime in early August maybe.

That'd match my understanding - the "k" should sound similar to the way you'd pronounce the "ch" in Loch Ness (which is Scottish, not Welsh, I know :)

Bwlch is a nice place incidentally - is the bunkhouse still going? The people that ran it and the pub over the road were some of the nicest people we met while backpacking round the UK.

Oh, and there's a very good freeware utility called AutoStitch that can do all the stitching-together of photos to create nice panoramic shots - available here.

It works with shots layered in tw dimensions too - I have one of the Grand Canyon which is about 10 photos wide by 4 deep and it worked it all out with no problems. Well worth a look.

I've also used AutoStitch to put together a panorama. It took a very long time, but did a good job.
