Alright, I posted on here a while ago looking for advice on a P&S for my dad (my dog ate his old one).
Despite what I've recommended he seems set on 3 cameras. The NV10, Canon PowerShot G7, and the Fuji Finepix f30 (or f31).
He's promised to look at any responses to this so any advice would be really appreciated. OR to make this an even harder decision for him, any other suggestions?
Ps. Any thoughts on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2?
Thanks, Jen |

my opinion on your 3 suggestions above:
NV10 - skip this (cant think of any real strengths)
Canon G7 - get this if your dad likes manual settings
Fuji F31fd - get this if your dad like fully Automatic (FD for face detection)

Perfect (Sorry Dad).
That's pretty much what I said to him.
NV10 - I think he was a little swept up in all the hype about the buttons and controls.
Canon G7 - I don't think he'll listen to me on this, but it's got more to it than he needs I think...
Fuji F31fd - Sounds good to me.
Oh. A little background: He is concerned with the camera being compact, having a decent-sized screen, it doesn't need any manual settings, it needs to be fairly user-friendly.
He's a guy so, he thinks he wants the newest, fancy, gadgety, camera. He doesn't. He needs something that's simple.
The Fuji was/is my pic of the 3.
Any other ideas? |

haha typical guy :) anyway, the Canon G7 isnt exactly ultra-compact. but, it will have all the bells and whistles and looks sophisticated. he can always use it on the Auto-mode, how does that sound? |

I think there is another camera to make things more difficult:
Nikon P5000 - it looks like a strong contender for the Canon G7 ! |

Adding to the variety, instead of narrowing: I have very good experience with Casio Exilim cameras, so, please add them to your list, if possible. They're small, compact, with all the buttons, and produce good images. |

If he doesn't need manual setting the G7 and P5000 are definitely overkill. Why not look at an A or S series powershot instead? |

The A620, A630 and A640 are all over kill too.
They have Shutter and Aperture priority modes.
TAv Mode not sure what it is but it gives u a 100% crop in the center of the screen while you manual Focus so u can see the exact focus details. |

Alright. So, the Fuji FinePix F31fd would be the best out of the 3? It was my pick. Maybe he'll see that too.

If he's after a large screen and fairly compact, then the Panasonic DMC-LX2 is TOPS!
I bought my mum one for xmas, and its great! Small, light, HU-HU-HUUUGE screen! Best thing about it is that it goes out to 28mm, and SHOOTS IN 16:9 WIDESCREEN!!!!!

I wouldn̢۪t recommend the Fuji Finepix, not that I'm that knowledgeable in the way of cameras, but I had one and I had to take it back twice within two months because it kept malfunctioning( thank god for warranties)I finally just traded it in for a different camera. Then again maybe this is specific with the one I had or maybe I am just dysfunctional. Who knows. |

IMHO a dead-on-arrival product is normal, and it does not say anything about how good/bad a camera is. You could just be unlucky to have received one. it could have been any camera, any model. |

I don't think he'd benefit from the Panasonic DMC-LX2. He wouldn't use all the manual settings. Besides all the extras would only serve to confuse him I think.
I only asked about the Panasonic DMC-LX2 because I'd borrowed a friend's for a bit and really like it. The noise @ higher ISO settings was kinda disappointing though.
Thanks for all the help guys. |
