Bummer I was so close to ribboning from a 3rd attempt at DPC! Being a begginer at this site, I unfortunately fell victim to negligence to the rules and regulations. And I write this so that people who are new to the site do not fall in the same trap.
When you take a picture KEEP A SEPERATE COPY OF THE ORGINAL! What I did was I got too excited and began editing the orignal in photoshop and kept the original as a layer named "original." Little did I not anticipate during the voting phase a "submit your original" sign came up! I was away from my computer for 2 days and hoped to God by miracle that upon my return I could find the original from the CF card or somewhere on the computer. I knew I was asking for too much as I already experienced 2 miracles within 3 weeks (the fog rolling in :)) and my chances werent good. No luck so I tried to salvage by saving the layer "orginal" as a JPG in photoshop. Knowing that would not be enough, I also submitted untouched original outakes. In the end, I was disqualified.
If you are reading this and you haven't acquainted yourself with the rules and regulations on Transfering, check this page out
Before the DQ, I was actually scoring higher than the current winner of the competition with a 7.7.. but with score fluctuations who knows where I would have ended. Anyhow, this is my attempt at contributing to the community for the day. Below is my submission as well as the original.

Wow. Sorry about the DQ, but at least you have the honour of having captured such a stunning photograph. Even the original was stunning enough.
Congratulations, too, on your excellent attitude regarding the DQ and your helping the community.

The sheer number of construction operations going on in that scene cause me to ask the question... is that Dubai?
ETA: Duh, it's in the title. Missed that on first glance.

Ack I share in your pain. I got dq'd because my computer was retarded and erased the exif data on one of my originals and i didn't notice and so they dqd me even though I sent them an untouched original. it originally came in fourth place and was a personal best of mine. |

Not to be devil's advocate or anything but..
I prefer the original shot by far. And by far, I mean, no contest in any way, shape or form. |

Shame about the DQ. I do think you went a bit over the top on the processing though.

Artyste I wholeheartedly agree and I also prefer the original to a certain extent. And the reason why I edited it and submitted is to cater to the DPC voter taste as crayon pointed out. The dreamy and unique prespective seem to be a winning recipe for the people on this site..
Thanks for all the kind comments thus far :) |

I agree. For me it's not because it's heavily edited but because the editing caused blowouts in the highlights that weren't there to begin with and doesn't enhance the shot in any way. Striking image regardless.

That stinks man, I feel your pain! This was the one and only image I voted a 10 in this challenge too.
Were you in a light aircraft or helicopter or something?
Very great shot regardless of the DQ! |

I have to say I would have voted the original with a few tweeks much higher than the one you entered.
Bad luck, the best lessons are always learned the hard way, I am sure we will see more of you in the front runners in the future.

Actually, SC hates to do that. "lol"
eta: I, too, like the original better. With just a touch of contrast maybe, and maybe a touch of color to really make it pop. BUT, the composition is what makes it so good for me. very well done.

Thanks yanko,
It was actually taken from the tallest building in the area from the 51st floor. The pace that this city (dubai) is growing in unfathomable. In a couple of years, the building taking this picture will be half the size of the tallest. 3 Buildings are going up 90+ flights!! |

wow Im not sure which one I like better but dam there both sweet. My first reaction to the original looked like there were CG buildings in it but the fact that its aparently real makes it that much better IMHO

Not to sound like a broken record but I, too, like the original much better. I'm not a huge fan of overprocessing. The capture itself is brilliant!!!! So sorry about your DQ |

Copy that. Sorry about the DQ :(
If you have a chance, any chance you'll post a version the way you like it most. Not per the, as you say "DPC" likes ;)
Your shot is most excellent out of cam, and needs some ever so slight contrast tweaks.

Awesome shot either way, but I'd probably like a compromise between the original and the edit.
Hate to hear about the DQ. is an awesome shot and as edited, very DPC :-)
