Hi, i was wondering if anyone has tried telephoto "converters" for their camera. Anyone tried it with the f717? I think I want a little more than 5x optical. I used to have a mavica fd 75, and bought a tiffen 2x telephoto converter, but when you were at a wide angle with the lens attached, you'd get a big dark ring around all the corners. I was wondering if anyone has tried this with a low priced telephoto converter (around $60) or if anyone has tried this with a genuine sony telephoto converter ($250) I would really appreciate a response, and would like to say thanks in advance. |

I bought a cheap teleconverter (2x) for $20 at a pawn shop. If you check my zoo photos, they were shot with that converter. I think any teleconverter will give you vingetting at wide angle.
Refracted has a kick-ass teleconverter for his F717. Maybe he'll kick in on the conversation.

I used to have both the Sony wide-angle and the telephoto for my F717, the HGD0758 and HGD1758. Sold both (wide to Refracted, tele to Brunosmad) when I got my 10D. I can say that they're large and heavy and not suited to walking around with them all day attached to the camera. I can also say that the teleconverter (HGD1758) vignettes at the wide half of the zoom range. It's pretty much unavoidable. The wide-angle is good all the way through the zoom range, which is to be expected. Still, I'd think hard before getting them. They're good, but heavy, expensive, cumbersome and decrease the performance of the lens on the camera. Still, if you want a good bit of reach or a good wide angle, they're not bad at all.

i might as well chime in even if you decided not to buy :) i got myself the olympus TCON-17 .. it's 1.7x and is very light. It expectedly vignettes at wide angle, but then, which doesn't? I calculated i only lose about 1/3rd of a stop of light, which is great. At full zoom, i get 323mm of zoom, which is about 8.5x in terms of the base 38mm the f717 has. I've used this teleconverter alot as it's very light, so i can walk around with it everywhere (me and jacko did an afternoon long shooting session around town and i had the telephoto on for most of it). It's not very expensive either, though maybe not 60$.. i got it for about 180$ canadian.. which is not bad considering sony's heavy telephoto lense is around 500$ canadian..
one note, it's 52mm, so you need a step down ring (which i permanently attach to the telephoto lense) to bring it up to 58mm. |
