OK. I just got my 5D today, and also the 16-35 f/2.8L and the 70-200 f/2.8L. I am all about protecting and taking care of my equipment. I feel I do a pretty good job of it. I currently have a Tamrac Expedition 7 backpack that I carry everything in. I have always just stored my lenses directly in the bag without any additional case. But now I have a question. My new lenses came with these fancy cases. Putting those in the bag along with the lens makes them too large and the bag does not close easily. I assume the backpack provides enough protection. However, I do have that paranoia about new equipment and so I would like to know, do you "double-protect" your lenses, putting them in the specific lens case, and then in your camera bag, or do you use just one or the other?
edit: correct spelling

I use the case for the 70-200 when traveling, because I don't put it in my bag at all, but pack it separately. If I carried a bag large enough for the 70-200, the case would prolly stay at home. I rarely drag the case along on short photo expeditions, but rather keep the lens on the camera. I will then put the lens into my bag if I change to another lens (it fits in the spot normally occupied by the body + 24-70). |

I just throw them in my back pack. The soft cases that came with them are stored away.

I carry my lenses in the backpack but they are inside moisture/dust protective bags. I am not so much concerned about the dust/dirt when in the bag, but I am about condensation when I go in/out during the cold winter.
