Will be nice to submit a photo and not get moronic comments about it being 'noisy' or 'grainy' for once. Maybe. |

I'm still not understanding how noise or grain adds to the impact of a photo. Somebody who knows, please explain this.If its something that you just have to "know"....thats cool too. |

If you want the easy way, I'd go for nostalgia or moody. Grain can enhance both feelings. It can also add texture to an otherwise boring photo. |

I just noticed it was basic editing. That's gonna be a bit harder. |

color noise is soooo unappealing to me. I'm afraid I'm gonna have to do it the faker way. |

a link to the first Image Grain
Image Grain 1
Do you think that it will be harder with this being under basic rules as the first was Advanced Editing IV so noise filters were alowed? |

Noise filters are legal in basic but I'm guessing if there is zero noise in the original and you add a ton in post it would be a problem but that's just me guessing here.

I think that was intended to be remove noise not incress it, wouldnt that then become a feature of the photo? hence DQ

Adding noise is legal in basic. Here is the relevant passage:
"You may:
use filters or stand-alone utilities designed to preserve image integrity (such as Neat Image, Unsharp Mask, Dust & Scratches, and color correction tools). These filters must be applied uniformly to the entire image, and must not be used in such a way that their use becomes a feature. No “effects” filters may be applied to your image, with the exception of Noise and Gaussian Blur."

Should be a third open challenge, for photos that meet the first two. I'm always conflicted about which to enter. Cross-dressing with grain would be great. |

Finally, a chance to shoot in ISO 1600!
BTW: Grain filters are NOT acceptable in Basic Editing...

I donno... cross-dressing really runs against my grain, if you catch my drift? ;-)

Finally? I shoot at 1600 alot here. It seems to be dark more often than not in Germany. |

The way I read this, the entire paragraph refers to filters that are designed to preserve image integrity. There's an argument that adding noise isn't preserving the image integrity, it's destroying the image integrity and therefore isn't legal.
Also, if the challenge is a noise/grain challenge, then applying a noise filter would violate the "not be used in a way that their use becomes a feature" clause.
Can SC comment on this? |

Why the need to clarify the rules,
Take a shot with High iso, edit in the normal manor but do not use a noise artifact remover program. wheres the issue?

PM an SC if you want to be sure but it seems pretty darn obvious to me that it's allowed. Here's the sentence that states so:
No “effects” filters may be applied to your image, with the EXCEPTION of Noise and Gaussian Blur."
