This is a series shot for our final in the photography class I'm taking right now. It was open ended so long as it was some kind of portraiture. Since it's not really my strong point in photography, I'd love some opinions about it, especially anything you think I might have done better.
When it's displayed in print it will be ordered like this:

Technically these are well executed but I feel like a couple are really redundant. The first and last are basically the exact same photo just facing the other way. The second and sixth are also very similar although not so much so as the first ones i mentioned. I feel like the studio light or flash, whatever it may be makes it so obvious that these are staged. I typically think of homeless style shots as a little less clean to really give the feeling of the person. I really like the feel of number 4, the only thing that bothers me is the bricks are really bright above the subject which draws you away from everything else. I would really like to have seen you play with the shadow in number 5. Maybe placing the light farther behind the subject and fairly low to cast a large shilouette onto the big wall. Just a few random thoughts, feel free to ask more specific questions. All that being said though, you did a good job.

Thanks for the comment, especially about the series as a whole. I kind of agree with you about the redundancy and I'm thinking I may just remove one each of the similar shots since six images would be plenty. I'm not sure I have any real specific questions but any other thoughts would be welcome. |

This gal/model (?) looks like an unhappy latenight shopper.
My first impression was that they do not look very natural...I guess my comments would start and end there.
I'd like more information.
What were you trying to show here?
Are these models or homeless people?
Was the lighting already there? Strobe/Flash?

I agree with trnqlty about the general quality of the photos being good, but that somehow their crisp, clean presentation detracts from what is being depicted. The light is intriguing, and the high contrast and clipping enhance your images greatly, but they seem to need something to bring home the message and create impact - noise or similar, perhaps? |

Here's some more info:
I was trying to play off the almost cliché 'homeless shot' that seems to come up a lot. I wanted to create a new perspective on a well-used idea. The shots were very setup, probably why they don't look very natural. I did everything myself, so I'd click the shutter and run into place. I got a couple other comments on how I look unhappy/mean, I think its because I was so worried about getting into position I didn't stop to think about my facial expression.
The lighting was all set up as well, just one strobe off camera except for #3 which had two strobes. I wanted to create a really dramatic effect with the lighting to emphasize the subject and immediate surroundings without too much extra going on.
Thanks for the comments again, and also for asking questions. One of the hardest parts for me is thinking about what I'm thinking about when I'm preparing/shooting a project. |
