my 250gb harddrive with all my pictures for the past 3 years died on me this morning. It cannot be found in BIOS, I've tried it on 3 computers.
is there hope w/out having to send it in for $1000+ recovery costs?
i don't think i'll pay that since they're personal, but i'd love to get them back
any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. |

If its dead... no.
If it were running id hook it to another PC and use ZAR - Zero Assumption Recovery. Its great for memory cards but u have to buy it todo a wholke hard drive.
I lost my 250GB Western Digital Caviar a couple months back with almost everything. I saved like 95% of my pictures and 20% of my home movies from backups. Eveerything else gone for good.
But as i said the drive isnt spinning or the hard drive controller is dead youre gonna have to spend some money. |

When the computer boots up does the drive make any unusual clicking noises?
Also, is it an external or internal drive?
In any case, if you where using the same cable to connect it to the other PC's. I would try another data cable. You'd be surprised. Good luck!

I actually did this with a drive at my office that went completly out...
Put it in a freezer bag overnight...take it out...hook it up...copy the files b4 it goes out again. I did it 3 days in a row and save 100+ files.

Ive heard of kenskids method, as far as it goes:
1 - Put it in the damn bag and seal it, this is to prevent moisture build up.
2 - This helps some but it also contracts the metal surface of the disk ever so slightly. Your supposed to let it warm up a bit before plugging it in.
3 - If the hard drive controller is fried this wont work and leaving the drive plugged up for a long period of time can cause a fire (can and it has absolutly nothing todo with freezing it). |

If it is an external hard drive, ask someone to take it out of the case and connect it to an EIDE port.
Give it to someone else and ask them to add it to their system. |

They sait "it cant be found in the BIOS" bios typically wont report anything on a drive connected via firewire and in most cases USB.
Id have to assume is internal. |

Try Stellar Phoenix FAT & NTFS data recovery software.
I have some great luck with this software in past.
Hope it might be helpful to you.
Download the demo //www.stellarinfo.com/partition-recovery.htm
See if it detects your hard drive and retrieve your data.
Best of Luck. |
