I am preparing to purchase one of these online tonight to use in upcoming challenge. Any recommendations?

If it's just for a challenge the free version of Neat Image should work fine. at such a low resolution you don't really need anything better.

I would add that even the free version is very good. Mainly lacks workflow integration batch processingetc. and it has limited output options.
