I read a tip that if you cover the flash on a digital pop-up flash with slide film, it suppresses the light from the flash.
Will this do any damage to the CCD?
Thanks. |

No idea, but why would you do that. If you don't want the flash you turn it off.... or am I misunderstanding? |

i don't see how covering the flash would damage the CCD - at least if you're talking about the image sensor.

I'm confused, why would you need to cover the flash?

covering the flash with an exposed x-ray film will work too! err for what?

I cover my flash all the time doing macros of insects and flowers. I use layers of tissue, or my finger over 1/2 the flash, or even colored tissue for different affects. Sometimes to much flash will over expose and that's why fill-in-flash. Van |

I have a Canon Powershot S2 IS with a popup flash and no hotshoe.
I want to light a scene from the side using an external slave flash without any fill flash from the popup.
If I put slide film over the flash it supresses the visible light but allows the infrared light to go through triggering the external flash.
Just want to know if this could do damage to the camera. |

What I've seen used as a flash diffuser for popup flash is a white film canister. It's open on one end so the flash doesn't heat up. |

Unexposed developed slide film is opaque to visible light but transparent to IR. You could cover the flash and use the IR to trigger slaves, without the flash contributing to the exposure. I can't think of any way this could damage the camera's CCD. It could cause the flash to overheat, but I find this unlikely as slide film should be partially transparent to thermal IR (stops slides from bursting into flames on a projector). |
