| I am also interested in this. How effective is the sigma as a Master with a 430 as slave? Is it worth getting the 580 instead? |

That's the flash I recently purchased and I'm happy with it. However, I sure wish there was something more substantial for a user manual!!! |

| If i were you, I would wait for Canon to release the 580II. It will have more power and greater flexabiltiy. |

The one thing I see making the choice simple for the majority of purchasers is the price. The Sigma having the majority of the features of the higher end Canon flashes but being ~$150 less than the 580EX makes it a bargain. |

I have done this same question before buy my Sigma.
Yes, Sigma is a bit more fragile unit, but have ALL, note it, ALL features of Canon 580EX. Including E-TTL II.
I have a friend that has a Canon 580EX and I could compare very well the two models. The Sigma unit take control of Canon 430DX normally too.
In one year of use I had notice only two flaws of Sigma design, one is the lack of a battery low indication. Then if your unit starts to blink the E-TTL indicator when you focus the camera, you need to change battery. But if are you in Manual mode (my predilect)? Then you get wierd things, don´t zoom, don´t recicle and needs to move to e-ttl mode to check if it blinks or simply change batterys.
The other thing is regard to the engagment with the camera. Some times the flash don´t engage. You move Zoom range in the lens and the flash dont go there. You press shutter half way out and the flash don´t show the operational range. This think was solvesd the two times happen simply turning flash and camera off, torned camera on and flash on, in this sequence.
I agree that Sigma is a good deal. Im very pleased with mine. My tought is that if can´t afford 580EX (by it´s robust contruction) don´t lose time with other Canon flash. Buy the Sigma.
