if you are a member of ppo or any of the mid states orginzation, convention is this week! We will be in dayton, ohio at the convention center there. There are going to be a ton of speakers, and a ton to learn.
thisis the list of speakers, click on their name to see their progrom. I also have entered prints into the print competition, it's a little late to do that now but you can come watch the judging.

I've seen Jack Ayers (jack of speed) speak before. Not bad, but I knew about 90% of what he was teaching, and about 30% of his talk was a Fuji commercial. I know Fuji reorganized a good bit and stopped a lot of it's speaker sponsoring so perhaps this will give him more time to talk.

I've read a book by Patrick Rice. I'm in Pa just over the Ohio line and at least where I am there are no mega studios. I took a week long class from Ralph Romaguerra last year and one night the speaker was Michael Redford - Ralph owns 3 studios near New Orleans and Michael is just south of Pittsbugh - both are in that mega category ($2 million in sales/year compared to the average studio of $200k) and both are more than willing to show you how they do it - the marketing, shooting, sales. I learned alot and my work got better and my profits got better.

The speakers I liked were the Antisdel's from kansas - a mother-daughter team. Jen Hillenga from Minnesota is a hoot - i'm not taking her class this year though. I'm taking a wedding class form Michele Celentano. If any of these come near you, get there and listen to them! The local org here is //www.trianglephotographers.org/ and they do a week long class (mar 11-16 this year) as well as 2 three day meets (may and october). School info //www.triangleinstitute.org/ with list of speakers/teachers on the right. They cover a WIDE variety of things - from beginning photography (yes!) to commercial with Ed Tilley -you need to bring MF FILM gear with you for class! (and he's from canton ohio)

I'm not a PPO member but perhaps you can tell me why SOOOO many innovative photogs come from ohio? I swear half the books I read, or most of the segments on PhotovisionVideo are ohio photogs! Ellie Vayo is one and she's at Triangle speaking on Seniors.

I hope to join PPA this year and make it the meets at Harrisburgh.
I've yet to enter a print in competetion...there's a lot more to it than just taking a pretty pic - about 1/2 of it is in proper presentation.

I've seen one 100 point print, Ralph Romaguerra had one and passed out 4x6's to the class. I'm afraid i'd get a 40 and be forever embarrassed.

well print comp. was juged today. I made out with 2 76's and an 84 that was talked down to a 79...it was so worth it though. i think photogrphers who don't enter their region are really missing out. it was prolly the most motivating thing I have ever done. I have two prints that are being fowarded to nationals (one of which is in the low key challenge and is doing really bad)

as far as why so many photographers come from ohio is simply...ohio is the best! lol jk
I might attribute that to two really big photography schools here. one being ohio state, on being oipandt, that was formerly oip. we also have a pretty dense population in the southern part, so that may up the odds. I am a student at oipandt and a ppo member. you should come over on saturday just for the trade show. I hear there isn't any like it in the world. I am also a member of ppa and going to enter prints for judging there. I really am stoked.
