if there was 1 kid playing on an unused train track, and 30 kids playing in an active train track; and a train is speeding towards the active track. you, are near a switch lever and could flick it to divert the train to the unused track. now, only a few seconds before it's too late to do anything... what would you do? |

If you flip the switch after the engine goes by you can probably derail the train and save all the kids, while only killing the engineer and everyone else on the train ... |

I'd leave the train on the original track, why should the 1 kid that is smart enough to stay off the active track get run over to save the 30 kids that are to stupid to get out of the way of the train?

that was my first thought too but I didn't consider people on the train...just figured it was a freight train.
And with 30 kids playing on one set of tracks SOMEONE pretty much has to see or hear it coming where as the one kid could easily miss it coming...well for a minute anyway.
Also, is the one kid mine? Are the 30 kids the bad ones that are always taunting the one kid and not letting him play with them? Are they the ones that keep throwing eggs at my house and putting firecrackers on my cat...I'll get you KIDS ONE OF THESE DAYS...DANG YOU....oh sorry. |

LOL ... while only killing the 200 people on the train!! pretty funny answer though! :)
if the kids were playing on an active train line, then there's something seriously wrong ... why don't they know it's active?? where are their parents, police, train company workers, responsible adults to tell them to move?
if those 30 kids died, parents would be blaming everyone else except themselves for not knowing where their kids were playing.
you can't win a hypothetical like this ... it's a no win situation. :)

hint: the decision making involved in this quiz, determines certain qualities about a person in the real world. |

i'm no expert, but that simple quiz is used in a decision making class. for example, some people would sacrifice that 1 "correct" kid while saving the 30 "wrong" kids. the factor was majority over minory, regardless of righteousness - this is sometimes adopted by governmental decisions. and then you add in the factor from what GeneralE said above, we sometimes fail to look further into an issue, like the train getting derailed due to the limited time, and further causing losses - be it more lives on the train, or goods it was carrying. |
