I picked up my 70-210 USM used about a year ago. This issue has always bothered me, but I've never wanted to do anything about it until I started playing with tripod-based macro/etc.

The zoom is loose. If you tilt the lens down, it just zooms. If I want to do a tripod mounted shot, I have to hold the zoom collar to prevent it from sliding forward. Of course this doesn't work with longer exposures, or when shooting macro because the slightest bump throws off the entire image.

How do you handle this, or do you just send it in for maintenance? I love the lens, except for this.

That condition is called zoom creep. Its very common on older lens that have been used. Only way to "fix" it is to send it in for repair, but I dont think there is any way to keep it fixed, with use it will happen again. Next best thing is get an internal zoom like the new 70-200 2.8 and it wont happen.

The difference being that I paid like $200, not $1000-1400. :p

But, yeah... if I had the money, I would.

a very valid point. BTW the 70-200 f4 can be had for under $600. i know still 3 times what you paid but a great lens for the cash if you got tired of your current one.

I was about to suggest gafters tape or electrical tape. :-)
