As I look through many many challenges one thing stands out; simple snapshots that anyone could take are placing higher than photographs that have artistic merit and actually took thought. Is it just me or does this not make sense to anyone else? Maybe someone should make it clear what voting should be based on. It would make the results more consistant and fair.

Voting is based on what people like -- art is not.

Third Place

I would like you to work out what I did in Basic Editing to achieve what I did. Then I would like you to try and tell me that I took a simple snapshot...and that anyone can get an 8 year old to be in the exact pose for the challenge, taking into account the flower and sunset. None of these three things will stay still for long. And then I would like you to try and explain why this image has no artistic merit.

Then I would like to know why it isn't consistent and fair to see a good shot take a place.

I don't always win...but I would rather see an attractive 'simple looking' shot win rather then a dull, cluttered image.

I don't recall the OP actually picking you out specifically..?

And to the OP: DPChallenge is about playing a game. It's about getting the greatest number of people to look at your image and say, "I like that". What it is that this "greatest number of people" like, at any given time, is constantly changing and evolving, but over the years one thing has remained pretty constant.. people like things that look good, have some kind of instant "wow" factor, and don't take much time to consider. This is especially true when faced with the sheer volume of images that go through here.

It's admirable that you are taking the time to worry about images that you deem more appropriate placers than others.. but in the end, the images that place high are (for the most part), deserved among the masses.

We can't regulate what to vote on when it comes to taste.. that is a fool's game.

Shizzle!

I like the original better.

I wonder how it would have done, stand alone?

My opinion...the original could stand the test of time, whereas your winner is more eye candy that probably, would fade quicker.

Yes you are right. And that is the beauty of it. Everyone has their own opinion. I went into this challenge with a specific image in mind...and it was to be orange. So that is why I went with it.

My 'Romance' entry called Love Is...was very similiar but with more variation in colour...so I wanted to stay with one colour...preferrably orange. If I didn't have that in mind to start with I probably would have gone with the original.

As for my image not being singled out...I know that. But I also know that this image is a very simple lined image, so I thought I would speak up. I was not speaking up for anyone else.

Like mine :P (LOL)

BTW: Judi, I think your shot was stunning and worthy of its placing. I have tried similar shots with my three girls and never had the talent you have. Your PP is phenomenal too (as usual).

You really questioning that? I agree the original probably has more of a lasting appeal than the entry but that means little in the challenges. Quick and to the point matters far more and the entry has that over the original.

The votes are what they are!

FWIW, I don't see any snapshots in the top twenty or thirty. It would be helpful to know what you mean by "snapshot" - if you are referring to, say, street scenes over studio shots, then catching the moment is an extraordinarily hard thing to do - those that scored highly with them caught (or made it look like they caught) fantastic moments.

I wasn't talking about your photograph or anyone's specificlly. I was speaking in general about the overall result. Your photograph is amazing and it does have artistic merit . You misunderstood me.

perhaps if more people with your opinion would vote, things would change
