I know there's probably a thread on this but I can't seem to find it.
Whenever I attempt to take a photo of something indoors without a flash they come out fuzzy. They appear to be in focus but they're really dark and blurry. I guess that means they're not in focus but I'm not sure why because I do focus.
I'm new to photography and I'm getting discouraged. Any ideas about what I'm doing wrong? |

My guess would be camera shake. Try using a tripod and see if that helps any. :) I'm still new to photography too, so I'm sure other people will be able to help more... but maybe this can get you started. :)

Hey Kotzie, everyone is going to tell you that your shutter is too slow. And they're all going to be right :-)
You'll probably need to shoot in Manual mode if your camera allows it so you can control the shutter. Blurry images in low light conditions like you described means your shutter is sloooooow (it's open too long).
Edit: camera shake and low light/slow shutter are all related

hi Lisa, indoor photography usually involve low light conditions. the problem you mentioned could be one or acombination of the following:
- your handshake (turn on your camera's anti-shake)
- slow shutter, causing subject movement (if shooting moving objects, people)
- too slow shutter, causing the anti-shake to be ineffective (applies to still objects and moving subjects)
- high ISO, meaning your camera may have chosen a very high ISO, and these naturally produces soft, fuzzy, grainy or "blurry" pics
my suggestion to you is to show us a good example of your indoor pic that have a problem.

Tripod or any other stable surface with self timer so that when you press on the shutter button it doesn't move the camera.

I uploaded two new photos to my portfolio that are examples of troubling blurriness. The Weight of the world being the biggest problem.
I'd love any input from anyone who has a minute to check 'em out. |

PS. I know there's a thread about putting thumbnails in the forums but I can't find it. |

and
You might want to turn on your onboard flash if you have one... my camera refuses to focus if there is not a flash mounted or open :)

Use the thumbnail link when you post, not the user link. The second last link on the toolbar.

one of your sample shot was ISO400, while the other ISO1000... i think we have found at least one of the reasons for that "blur" you complained about. try using lower ISO values, like ISO100, but use a longer shutter time (regarded your subject can keep still) |
