I have a Canon PowerShot A85.
Got it about 2 years ago.

Lately, I've noticed that the screen has weird lines flickering across it in shoot mode (looks fine in review mode though).

Until last night, the lines hadn't shown up in the actual photographs.

But last night's photos had weird noise lines across all the photos.

And it's asking for new batteries constantly.

I use rechargeable batteries - it takes 4 AA batteries. What I mean by constantly - I changed the batteries this morning to a freshly charged set. Took about 6 photos and the camera shut down. Turned it back on, tried to take another photo, it shut off again. Switched the batteries and got a couple more photos before it shut off again.

I'm going to get some non-rechargeable batteries tonight and see if that helps. Not sure what I'm going to do if it's a camera problem though.

Good idea to try some fresh (different) batteries. It could be that your rechargeables have had it. It still seems unlikely that the lines on the display (and now photos) are related to this, but I suppose it could be.

Sounds like something is creating a short-circuit and draining the batteries. I'd check the batteries in something else (e.g. flashlight) to make sure they're working properly.

Try cleaning the battery contacts (alcohol should be OK).

Move any moving parts around -- e.g. shooting mode switch -- and try with it in a different position.

Ugh - so it's more likely that the camera has bit the dust ?

I'll try the batteries out as soon as the baby wakes up (he's napping on my lap right now).

Odd.

Switched the rechargable batteries into a remote - it worked. Into an alarm clock - it worked.

Put new non-rechargable batteries into the camera, and it seems to be working okay. Powers up, takes photos. No weird lines.

We'll see how long it lasts, or if it drains these insanely fast too.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Did you ever find out what was wrong with the camera?
